Winners are not judged

Catherine II
Catherine II

Phraseologism: Winners are not judged.

Meaning: It is not appropriate to blame the person who won the victory.

Origin: Words that, according to legend, belong to the Russian Empress Catherine II. She allegedly said them, defending A. V. Suvorov, who was wanted to be tried for the fact that, contrary to the order of the commander-in-chief Rumyantsev, he undertook an assault on the Turkish fortress Turtukai in 1773. On the verdict, Catherine wrote: "Winners are not judged." But this legend is not confirmed by any historical sources.

Random phraseology:

If someone is somewhere with us sometimes.

Meaning:

A phrase-symbol of all sorts of "denunciations", which are made so timidly, carefully, in such a streamlined form that the object of the so-called "criticism" simply does not notice it (iron.).

Origin:

Lyrics from the song "The Invisible Battle" written by composer Mark Minkov. To the words of the poet Anatoly Sergeevich Gorokhov (b. 1938) for the popular TV series in the USSR "Experts are investigating" (1972-1989). The song sounds in the film as the musical motto of the main characters of the series - investigators, other police officers: "If someone here and there sometimes // Doesn't want to live honestly, // So, again we go into an invisible battle, // So it's appointed fate for you and me - // Service day and night!"

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Revealed the secret of successful people 14.03.2018

Scientists at the University of Catania conducted a study whose results could save millions of not-too-successful and wealthy people from self-flagellation and depression. They came to the conclusion that the success of a person does not depend at all on his innate talents, intelligence and ingenuity, but simply on a combination of circumstances.

The researchers created a computer simulation based on a real world money distribution model, according to which 85% of the world's wealth belongs to 10% of the world's population. At the same time, such qualities as talent, intelligence and efficiency are on average distributed evenly among the inhabitants of the Earth.

In the course of the study, the computer simulated a model in which a thousand people were represented with average statistical abilities and a level of well-being. Then random events were introduced into the base model, which could be used by the same "people". As a result, 20% of a thousand initially equal individuals captured 80% of the "wealth" after some time. The situation with variable parameters was repeated several times, but in each case the outcome was characteristic.

Based on the results, the researchers concluded that successful people are not necessarily gifted with any talents from birth, they can be the owners of the most ordinary mental abilities, but it is the luck to be in the right place at the right time that determines success.

From a practical point of view, the results of the study, according to its authors, can be useful when considering the effectiveness of merit evaluation systems. The study shows that a potential winner of this or that award and a candidate for receiving honors does not necessarily "deserve" them - perhaps he was just lucky.
