Nothing in the eyes

Proverbs and sayings
Proverbs and sayings

Phraseologism: Nothing in the eyes.

Meaning: To know absolutely nothing, even the simplest things (joking).

Origin: The emergence of a phraseologism is associated with the place of the letter "A", which begins the Russian alphabet and was pronounced earlier when learning to read and write as "az". Az has become a symbol of the beginning, the foundations of knowledge, since this is the first letter of the Church Slavonic alphabet, according to which they taught literacy. Not knowing even the first, the easiest letter of the alphabet to pronounce and write, has become a phraseological symbol of absolute ignorance, extreme ignorance.

Random phraseology:

Sparrow night.

Meaning:

A short summer night with continuous thunderstorms or lightning.

Origin:

There are several versions of the origin of this expression. The first version says: according to ancient beliefs, in Belarus or in the Smolensk region, near the Assumption (August 15, old style) or between Ilyin's day and the Nativity of the Virgin (September 8, old style), a mountain ash night comes with a storm, thunder, lightning. In central Russia, such nights were called sparrow nights, but they were not associated with any specific date. The expressions mountain ash night and sparrow night are echoes of some cult-mystical constructions that correlated the cult of mountain ash and the cult of a sparrow with a thunderstorm, lightning, lightning, and therefore, apparently, with the ancient Slavic god of thunder in his most ancient incarnation, preceding Perun. According to the second version, this refers to a pockmarked (like a sparrow) night, when darkness is interspersed with lightning. On such nights, sparrows fly out of their nests, chirp anxiously, gather in flocks, etc. According to the third version, the original form of the combination was rowan night, i.e. "speckled, motley night" - a night with flashes of lightning, and most often with wind, storm, thunder. On the basis of the expression rowan night, later, as a result of folk etymological rethinking, a turnover was formed rowan night, and then sparrow night.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Septic tanks generate electricity from their contents 20.03.2016

A team of scientists from the University of Bath, Queen Mary University of London and the Bristol Robotics Lab have developed microbial fuel cells that generate energy from urine.

Microbial fuel cells work on the ability of some bacteria to process organic matter, thereby generating electricity. At the same time, room temperature and normal pressure are sufficient, which is unattainable with other methods of obtaining bioenergy. The researchers set themselves the goal of reducing the cost of standard devices of this type, as well as increasing their electricity generation.

Electrodes containing expensive materials such as platinum are commonly used to create microbial fuel cells. In their work, the scientists decided to use cheap carbon fiber and titanium wire. In order to speed up the reaction, the microbial element contained a catalyst made from glucose and egg white. Urine was used as an energy source.

The researchers tested the effectiveness of the device by changing the parameters of its individual elements. It turned out that increasing the length of the electrode from four to eight millimeters increases the output power tenfold.

According to Jon Chouler, one of the authors of the work, the new design is cheaper and more powerful than traditional microbial fuel cells.

Previously, a team of scientists from Princeton University and Florida Gulf Coast University used rotten tomatoes as an energy source for microbial fuel cells.
