Phraseologism: No great Patroclus! The scornful Thersites lives!

Meaning: Regret for the departed worthy people, for the injustice of fate.

Origin: From the poem "The Triumph of the Winners" (1829) by Vasily Andreevich Zhukovsky (1783-1852), which is a translation of the ballad of the same name "Das Siegesfest" by Johann Friedrich Schiller: ! // The scornful Thersites lives!" Patroclus - one of the heroes of the Iliad, who died at the hands of Hector near Troy. Thersites is one of the participants in the Trojan War, a physical and moral monster. "Contemptuous" - in the sense of contemptible, insignificant.

Random phraseology:

Speak forty barrels of prisoners.

Meaning:

Too much to say about smth. implausible, slander with three boxes.

Origin:

The core of this expression is the word "barrel" - a symbol of a large amount of something. The numeral "forty" further enhances the semantic expressiveness of the expression. The phrase "forty barrels" - "a large amount of something" is found in Russian epics. The word "prisoner" as part of a phraseological unit has a special meaning - "small dried fish". This word was recorded by G. I. Kulikovsky in the Olonets dialects. "To tell forty barrels of prisoners," therefore, is a fishing joke, originally meaning "to tell all sorts of tales about an allegedly huge catch."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. New application of ultrasonic devices 20.04.2020

Ultrasound machines could have a new medical use: helping patients with severe brain damage recover.

Being in a coma is a complete uncertainty. No one can say how long it will last, and whether a person will be able to get out of this state at all. In addition, it is almost impossible for doctors to predict the health consequences of a coma even if the patient wakes up.

But a new experimental technique offers hope for "awakening" patients after a coma. All you need is a pair of connecting cables and a battery.

Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles report what they call a brain test. For this, scientists turned to an extremely common tool in medicine - ultrasound. It uses a low intensity focused pulse.

So far, it has only been used once, in a 25-year-old patient. By aiming the ultrasound at the thalamus, the doctors found that it activated the patient's neurons enough to cause real improvement. Within 10 minutes of being exposed to the ultrasound, the guy began to show remarkable progress: he fully regained consciousness, understanding of language, and was able to nod and shake his head when answering questions.
