Prepare, as for Malanin's wedding

Proverbs and sayings
Proverbs and sayings

Phraseologism: Prepare, as for Malanin's wedding.

Meaning: A lot (about food, treats).

Origin: 1. The turnover goes back to an old folk custom associated with the celebration of New Year's Eve. In the church calendar there is the day of Melania the Roman, whose name day falls on December 31st. The evening of this day is still called "generous" in many Christian countries. And, for example, in Ukraine they played a comic wedding of Vasyl (Basil of Caesarea, January 1) and Melanka. Malanin's wedding, therefore, is something like a symbolic meeting of the old and new years, the expression to prepare, as for Malanin's wedding, originally meant "to prepare as much food as a good hostess prepares on New Year's Eve." 2. The version of the origin of the phraseologism was presented at a special exhibition that opened in 1998 in the architectural museum-reserve of the city of Starocherkassk (the former capital of the Don Cossacks), in the courtyard of the atamans Efremovs (Nezavisimaya gazeta. 1998. 1 September). The main characters of this story are the Don Cossack Stepan Danilovich Efremov, chieftain of the Don Cossacks, and the young Cossack Melanya (Malanya). Stepan, who had previously been married twice, fell in love with this Cossack woman, who sold bagels at the market and thus supported her entire large and poor family. After much persuasion, Stepan won the hand of Melania. It was in 1753. To celebrate, Stepan Efremov decided to arrange a wedding, which had not yet been in the village: tables with all kinds of treats - pies, pigs, bull sides, sturgeons, sterlets, belugas and others - were put up along the entire length of the main street of the Don capital , and specially appointed Cossacks made sure that there were no sober people at this holiday, which lasted a week. Such a wedding, of course, could not go down in the history of the Don region.

Random phraseology:

Double-edged stick.

Meaning:

About what can end both well and badly.

Origin:

The expression retains the popular, now obsolete use of the preposition o in the meaning of "with" (cf. folk snake with seven heads), i.e. a stick with two ends means "a stick with two ends." The one who is hit with a stick can catch it, grab it and start hitting the opponent with the other end.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Implant to measure the level of oxygen in the body 20.04.2021

University of California engineers have created a tiny wireless implant that measures oxygen levels in tissues deep under the skin. The device, which is smaller than a regular ladybug, will help doctors monitor the condition of transplanted organs or tissues, as well as warn of a possible unsuccessful transplant.

The technology also paves the way for a variety of miniaturized sensors that can track other key biochemical markers in the body, such as pH or carbon dioxide. One day, these sensors will become minimally invasive methods for monitoring the biochemistry of internal organs and tissues.

Oxygen is a key component in the ability of cells to convert the food we eat into energy. Almost all tissues of the body need a constant supply of it. Most methods for measuring tissue oxygenation provide information about what is happening at the surface of the body. They can only penetrate a few centimeters. Some types of magnetic resonance imaging can show information about oxygen saturation of deep tissues, but this takes time.

Since 2013, scientists have been working on miniature implants that use ultrasonic waves to communicate with the outside world, they safely propagate through the body over long distances and have become the basis of ultrasound imaging technology in medicine. The team of scientists tested the developed implant with an oxygen sensor by monitoring the level of oxygen in the muscles of sheep.

This type of oxygen sensor is different in that it can directly measure the amount of oxygen in tissues in real time. One possible application of this device is the monitoring of organ transplantation. It can also be used to measure tumor hypoxia, which can help doctors adjust radiation therapy.

In the future, the developers see its use for monitoring fetal development and caring for premature babies, who often require supplemental oxygen. It will also help minimize some of the negative effects of excessive oxygen exposure, such as retinopathy of prematurity or chronic lung disease.
