Torment words

Nadson S.Ya.
Nadson S.Ya.

Phraseologism: Torment words.

Meaning: 1. About creative torment, the search for a writer, a person working with the word. 2. About the inability to express one's thoughts clearly and concisely (jokingly).

Origin: From the poem "Dear friend, I know ..." (1882) by the Russian poet Semyon Yakovlevich Nadson (1862-1887), named after the first line: "Dear friend, I know, I know deeply // That my verse is powerless, pale and I am sick, // I often suffer from his impotence, // I often secretly cry in the silence of the night ... // There is no torment in the world stronger than the torment of the word.

Random phraseology:

We will retire under the canopy of the jets.

Meaning:

It is cited ironically as an example of "exquisitely beautiful speech" or an example of "high poetic style".

Origin:

From the comedy The Inspector General (1836) by N.V. Gogol (1809-1852), Khlestakov’s words (act. 4, yavl. 13): “There is no difference for love, and Karamzin said: laws condemn. We will retire under the canopy of the jets. Hands of yours, hands please." "Canopy of jets" is a meaningless phrase, since Khlestakov, wanting to decorate his speech, mixes different images typical of the common poetics of those years - "river jets" and "tree canopy".

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

A new way to generate electricity with water 01.05.2014

Scientists from the Korea Institute of Electronic Technology and Seoul National University have come up with a new way to generate energy.

Researchers have created an unusual element for the toilet, which allows you to convert the energy potential of the flushed water into electricity. Electricity obtained in this way can be used for various household needs. The study showed that the movement of one drop of water is enough to light one green LED.

Structurally, the element created by scientists is a capacitive active converters. Consisting of several layers, they are wrapped around transparent structured electrodes.

Experiments have proven that they can generate electricity directly in flowing water. This shows that the natural movement of water can be used quite widely, and not only for domestic needs, but also in production.

Scientists believe that their technology will make it possible to use the movement of water in large volumes, such as sea waves or rain, to generate electrical energy.
