Dangerous age

Honore de Balzac
Honore de Balzac

Phraseologism: Dangerous age.

Meaning: Age of self-determination and social protest.

Origin: From Danish: Den farlige alder. The title of a novel (1910) by the Danish writer Karin Michaelis (1872-1950), which refers to the age of a woman between 40 and 50 years old. But today, in this sense, the concept of Balzac age is used. The phrase "dangerous age" has long acquired a different meaning and is applied, as a rule, to adolescents, children of transitional age (13-15 years).

Random phraseology:

The battlefield after the victory belongs to the marauders.

Meaning:

It is cited as an ironic commentary on the situation when the political victory of any party in the country is used in their own interests by the forces that supported this party and ensured its victory.

Origin:

Title of the play (1995) by playwright and writer Edvard Radzinsky. Perhaps the author was inspired by a line from the novel "Les Miserables" (1862, part 4, book 7, ch. 3) by Victor Hugo (translated by N. Kogan): "Robbers always sneak after the winners." Serves in part as an analogue of the famous phrase of the writer Mariano Azuela (1873-1952) The revolution is prepared by thinkers, and bandits make.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Auds radio gun against intruder drones 23.10.2015

British companies Blighter Surveillance Systems, Chess Dynamics and Enterprise Control Systems have introduced a new Auds (Anti-UAV Defense System), which is designed to deal with drones that violate the law or pose some kind of threat.

The Auds radar system scans the surrounding area for illegally used drones. After establishing visual contact, the Auds system uses a powerful radio signal, with which the connection between the operator and the drone is interrupted. Moreover, the one who is at the Auds control panel has the ability to stop the drone in the air for a short period of time. Or you can make the drone not move until the battery runs out, after which it will just fall to the ground.

The Auds system not only successfully passed a series of tests funded by the UK government, but also entered the commercial production stage.

The demand for such systems will grow as news that drones are increasingly appearing near civilian airports, as well as the facts that today unmanned aerial vehicles are actively used by intruders and terrorists, will increase.
