Fifth column

Emilio Mola
Emilio Mola

Phraseologism: Fifth column.

Meaning: Secret agents of the enemy - spies, saboteurs, traitors, traitors (published disapproved).

Origin: From Spanish: Quinta columna. It is generally accepted that this expression is from a speech on the radio (autumn, 1936) by the Spanish General Emilio Mola (1887-1937), who during the years of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) led the attack of the Franco rebels on Republican Madrid. In it, he said, threatening the inhabitants of Republican Madrid, that, in addition to the four army columns at his disposal, marching on Madrid, there is also a fifth - in the city itself. These are secret supporters of Franco who will stab the Republicans in the back when a decisive attack on the city begins. A friend of the version, E. Mola said these words at his headquarters during a meeting with foreign journalists. There is a third version of the origin of this turnover: the English journalist Lord St. Oswald claimed that the expression "fifth column" first appeared in his telegram from Madrid, sent to the editors of the British newspaper "Daily Telegraph" in September 1936. But be that as it may, , back in the years of the Spanish Civil War, the concept of "fifth column" began to be associated with the name of General Mola. So, Dolores Ibarruri in the article "Defending Madrid - defending Spain" (gaz. "Mundo Obrero" dated October 3, 1936) wrote: "The traitor Mola said that he would throw "four columns" against Madrid, but only the "fifth" would attack. [...] The "fifth column" is inside Madrid, and first of all it is necessary to defeat it." The popularity of the expression was promoted by Ernest Hemingway's play "The Fifth Column" (1938).

Random phraseology:

I do not want to be a jester below the Lord God.

Meaning:

About human dignity.

Origin:

From a letter (June 8, 1834) from A. S. Pushkin (1799-1837) to his wife: “... Now they look at me as a serf, with whom they can do as they please. Opal is easier than contempt. I, like Lomonosov, do not want to be lower than the Lord God." "Below" in translation from the archaic Russian language "even". Pushkin's words are a paraphrase of the famous words of M. V. Lomonosov, which have become winged. Pushkin cites these words of Lomonosov twice more. In his diary, he writes (May 10, 1934): "The sovereign was not pleased that I did not speak of my chamber junkership with tenderness and gratitude - I can be a subject, even a slave, but I will not be a serf and a jester with the king heavenly." In the article "Journey from Moscow to St. Petersburg" (1833-1835), he writes about Lomonosov: "... But he knew how to stand up for himself and did not value either the patronage of his patrons, or his well-being, when it came to his honor or the triumph of his beloved ideas. Listen to how he writes to this very Shuvalov, the representative of the muses, his high patron, who took it into his head to play a trick on him. "in Lomonosov's time it meant "jester", which Pushkin points out in this letter to his wife. The poet quotes Lomonosov's words from memory, but thanks to this inaccurate quotation, it becomes clear what exactly in this phrase Pushkin considered especially important for himself.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Power miniblock for high current POL converters 22.01.2008

International Rectifier has announced the iP1206, a new technical solution for the implementation of step-down synchronous converters used to power telecommunications and network equipment.

The IC is the latest addition to the iPOWIR family of power miniblocks containing all the passive components and semiconductors for realizing the power part of synchronous converters. Based on iPl206, it is possible to implement a single-phase converter with an output current of up to 30 A and a two-phase converter with two independent outputs for currents of 15 A each. Both options are based on anti-phase operation of the channels in order to reduce input voltage and current ripple. To achieve high bulk density, iPl206 uses a full-fledged PWM controller and an optimized power stage based on modern semiconductor devices.

Since the new chip contains all the semiconductor and passive components that are important in terms of conversion quality, only a few additional power passive components are required to create a high-quality converter. At the same time, the requirements for the qualification of the developer and the printed circuit board are significantly reduced.

The features of the iP1206PBF are a constant PWM frequency of 600 kHz in the channels, lossless current limiting, overvoltage and overtemperature protection, offset start mode, and output voltage tracking. The input voltage range is 7,5...14,5 V, the output voltage range is 0,8...5,5 V.
