The first Americans were Japanese

04.11.2001

The first people who came to America from Asia may have been the descendants of one of the ancient peoples of Japan.

A comparison of two thousand ancient and modern human skulls collected around the world showed that the closest relatives of the first Americans were the ancient Japanese, whose civilization belonged to the so-called Jomon culture (VIII - I millennium BC), and the Ainu - also ancient , albeit a younger people who inhabited the northern part of the Japanese islands. It was the representatives of these two peoples who crossed the Bering Strait 15 thousand years ago (at that time there was an isthmus in its place) and first settled in Alaska, and a thousand years later they reached Cape Horn - the end of South America.

Modern Japanese still retain some of the features of the people of the Jomon era. The same traits are seen in the American Indians of the Sioux, Blackfoot, and Cherokee tribes. testify that the ancient Japanese were skilled shipbuilders and probably sailed south along the western coast of America, founding settlements in the most fertile places.

This means that man knew how to build ships at the time of hunting and gathering, in the Neolithic, long before the dawn of agriculture. Proof of this is the ancient remains of birch bark canoes discovered in Japan, very similar to boats, which were later used by the natives of America.

The second migration from Asia to America took place 3 - 4 thousand years ago, and the Chinese, Mongols and residents of Southeast Asia participated in it. They probably sailed on the water through the same Bering Strait. From these settlers came the Eskimos and Aleuts, and some migrants moved south and gave rise to the Navajo Indian people.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Optimal conditions for the most efficient operation of laser plasma accelerators 17.09.2017

Traditional electron accelerators have long become one of the main types of scientific instruments, extremely intense and short radiation pulses produced by synchrotrons and free electron lasers allow scientists to study matter and processes occurring on an atomic scale. But even the smallest electron accelerators now occupy an area comparable to the area of a football field.

An alternative to traditional electron acceleration technologies is the laser-plasma acceleration method, which, with a small size of the accelerator, makes it possible to obtain a beam of accelerated high-intensity electrons. But accelerators of this type have one drawback - with their help it is very difficult to obtain a stable beam of electrons with a stable brightness. And this problem was solved by physicists from the research center HZDR (Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf), Germany, who managed to determine a number of parameters for creating optimal operating conditions for a laser-plasma electron accelerator.

The principle underlying the technology of laser-plasma acceleration is quite simple, a powerful laser beam is focused in a gas medium, which under its influence turns into a plasma, into an ionized state of matter. The energy of the laser beam causes the electrons to leave their "native" atoms, which creates a kind of "bubble" of a strong electric field in the volume of the plasma. This region of the electric field, which follows the pulse of laser light, is a wave that travels almost at the speed of light. And the electrons trapped on the crest of this wave are also accelerated almost to the speed of light. Exposure of these electrons to an additional pulse of laser light produces bright and ultrashort X-ray pulses, with the help of which scientists "see through" the studied samples of various materials.

The strength of secondary X-ray radiation directly depends on the number of high-energy electrons involved in this process. However, when a large number of electrons are accelerated, the plasma wave decays due to the influence of effects associated with these electrons and their electric field, which, moreover, adversely affects the shape of the beam. The distorted shape of the beam and the instability of the plasma wave lead to the fact that the beam contains electrons with different levels of their energy and other parameters.

"But in order to be able to use an electron beam for high-precision experiments, a stable beam consisting of electrons with the same parameters is required," says physicist Jurjen Pieter Couperus, "All the electrons in the beam must be in the correct place at the right time."

Scientists from HZDR carried out a number of works aimed at improving the quality of the electron beam produced by laser-plasma accelerators. They found that adding a small amount of nitrogen to helium, which is used to create plasma, greatly improved the situation. "We can control the number of electrons riding the plasma wave by changing the concentration of nitrogen," explains Jurien Peter Kuperus, "In our experiments, we found that the ideal case is when the plasma wave carries electrons with a total charge of exactly 300 picocoulombs. Even the smallest deviation from this value in any direction leads to energy dissipation, which reduces the quality of the generated beam. "

The performed calculations have shown that in order to generate a high-quality one, it is still required that the peak current of electron movement on the plasma wave crest be at least 50 kiloamperes.

“Using the ultrashort pulses of DRACO's petawatt laser, we will be able to generate a high-quality electron beam at a peak current of 150 kiloamperes,” says Jurien Peter Kuperus, “This will exceed the capabilities of all modern large-scale electron accelerators by as much as two orders of magnitude. And this will allow us to create very compact next generation X-ray sources".
