Dead Souls

Gogol N.V.
Gogol N.V.

Phraseologism: Dead Souls.

Meaning: 1. People who exist only on paper - for the record, "for show", for show, etc. - imaginary members of the party, members of the club of voters, authors of a collective letter, etc. 2. People are morally, spiritually undeveloped.

Origin: Title of the poem (1842) by N. V. Gogol (1809-1852). It is sometimes believed that the expression was widely used in the era of serfdom. In fact, it was born only thanks to Gogol's poem, since such a phrase is not found either in dictionaries or in official documents of that time. Therefore, this expression outraged a lot of people then. Censorship, for example, protested because it considered such a phrase blasphemous and contrary to the teachings of the church, according to which the soul is immortal, and therefore Gogol's words are nonsense. And Gogol's close friend, Professor of Moscow University M. P. Pogodin, was outraged by another: this expression seemed to him a crime against the purity of his native speech. In a letter to Gogol, he wrote: "Dead Souls" are not in the Russian language. There are revision souls, assigned, withered, profited..." The expression "dead souls" first appeared in Gogol's papers in 1835: in a letter to A. S. Pushkin dated October 7, he informed the poet that he had followed his advice to write a novel about buyer of dead peasants - began to write "Dead Souls". Apparently, this version of the title of the novel was already well known to the poet. But which of them was the first to utter the expression - "dead souls", who, in fact, is its author - this question remains open .

Random phraseology:

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Advanced technology for recycling waste office equipment 21.12.2006

Sooner or later, one way or another, a computer, TV or mobile phone will one day cease to be a luxury item and go to a landfill.

For example, in Germany alone, two million tons of electronic scrap are found there every year. And one fifth of this weight, that is, 400 thousand tons, falls on plastics. However, only 1% of them can be recycled.

The problem is that such plastics contain heavy metals, bromine-based fire-fighting additives, and all kinds of pigments. All of them are harmful to the environment and, in accordance with EU directives, must not enter the product obtained during processing. And another directive requires that 75% of plastic waste be recycled. Puzzled by these instructions, European engineers are trying to find a way out.

One of the methods was proposed by scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Engineering Processes and Packaging, together with the Crea-Cycle company from the city of Grebenbroich. They managed to bring the degree of waste recycling to 95%.

"First of all, we grind electronics-containing waste in giant mills and remove metals," says project manager Dr. Andreas Maurer. "What remains is a mixture of crushed plastic and wood. harm to the environment. The insoluble and dangerous components of the garbage remain. However, they will not necessarily return to the landfill: there are consumers in the chemical industry for them."
