Ilya Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov

Phraseologism: Your gasoline - our ideas.

Meaning: About business partnership, which is expressed in the implementation of the ideas of one partner at the expense of money (other opportunities) of the other.

Origin: From the novel The Golden Calf (1931) by Soviet writers Ilya Ilf (1897-1937) and Evgeny Petrov (1903-1942). Words by Ostap Bender to Adam Kozlevich.

Random phraseology:

Through the sleeves.

Meaning:

Without diligence, carelessly.

Origin:

In Russia, long sleeves used to be common, which were rolled up before work (hence, having rolled up the sleeves - diligently get down to business), and after work they fell down to warm the hands. Dropped sleeves got in the way. Hence the saying arose: to work carelessly means "to work carelessly, reluctantly, lazily."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Dry cleaning can be dangerous 03.12.2011

Fifteen-year-old schoolgirl Alexa Danzler from the city of Arlington (USA) became interested in the problem: do the dangerous chemicals used in this process remain on clothes after dry cleaning?

She sewed squares of wool, silk, cotton, and polyester into the lining of seven identical men's jackets and took the jackets to the dry cleaners. Some jackets have been dry-cleaned up to six times. Then the schoolgirl turned to the local university with a request to do a chemical analysis of the experimental shreds.

It turned out that they still contained the solvent perchlorethylene, which is used in most dry cleaners and is known to cause cancer and neurological diseases. Moreover, this chemical is the greater, the more often the fabric was cleaned, and especially it accumulates in wool.

Although all countries have standards for the permissible levels of perchlorethylene vapor in industrial premises, no one has yet thought about its residues in clothing.
