White terror
Napoleon I Bonaparte
Phraseologism: White terror.
Meaning: Systematic mass extermination by the counter-revolution of the leaders and participants of the revolutionary movement.
Origin: In 1815, in France, after the "hundred days" and the subsequent restoration of the Bourbons, proscription lists of persons who contributed to the return from the island of Elba and the new accession of Napoleon were compiled. Mass arrests of revolutionaries and Bonapartists began. "Across France... a wave of 'white terror' swept through, as this movement was then (for the first time in history) called" (EV Tarle, Talleyrand, M. 1939, p. 144).
Random phraseology:
Weave (fence) wattle.
Meaning:
To talk nonsense, talk nonsense (disapproved).
Origin:
Initially, the combination "to weave a wattle fence" and "to fence a wattle fence" was used in the direct meaning of "connecting, twisting rods, making a fence." The figurative meaning was formulated on the basis of the similarity between the manufacture of a wattle fence and monotonous, sluggish speech. |

Artificial leather for touch emulation
15.04.2024
In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men
14.04.2024
The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
Random news from the Archive Panasonic Lumix S5
04.09.2020
Panasonic has launched a new Lumix S5 full-frame mirrorless camera. The novelty is a slightly more affordable solution compared to the Lumix S1.
The new Panasonic Lumix S5 camera is equipped with a 24,2-megapixel full-frame sensor. Despite the fact that the device is equipped with a larger sensor than the GH5 model, the dimensions of the novelty turned out to be smaller. The camera contains a built-in image stabilization mechanism that provides compensation within 5 exposure stops. The device has an electronic OLED viewfinder with a resolution of 2,36 million dots and a magnification of 0,74, a swivel 3-inch display with a resolution of 1,84 million dots, two slots for SD memory cards (one UHS-I, one UHS-II) and 2200 mAh battery that charges via USB-C port. The case provides protection against dust and drops of water.
When shooting still images, ISO 51200 upscaling is supported. Movies can be recorded in 4K resolution at 60 fps (10-bit, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling) or 30 fps (10-bit, 4:2 chroma sub-sampling: 2). Support for HDR and V-Log/V-Gamut is also mentioned. The dynamic range is claimed to be over 14 exposure steps, which is "virtually consistent" with the capabilities of the company's specialized cinematographic cameras.
The new Panasonic Lumix S5 will go on sale in mid-September for a suggested retail price of $1999,99. The kit with the 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 lens costs $2299,99.
