Best the enemy of the good

William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare

Phraseologism: Best is the enemy of the good.

Meaning: 1. Encouragement of someone who is ready to give up the good for the sake of the better, when once done work is redone, time is spent on its improvement, etc. 2. Ironic warning: despite all efforts, "the best" can not be achieved, but lost at the same time already achieved "good" - quite real.

Origin: For the first time in world literature, this idea is found in the commentary of the Italian author M. Giovanni (1574) to Boccaccio's Decameron. Later, W. Shakespeare would express a similar thought in the tragedy "King Lear": "Striving for the best, we often spoil the good." But. It became a catchphrase after the publication of the novel La begueule by Voltaire (pseudonym of François Marie Arouet, 1694-1778), which used this phrase. Voltaire later uses this expression again in his "Philosophical Dictionary" - in an article on dramatic art. Therefore, it was Voltaire who was considered to be the author of this aphorism, which was usually quoted in the French, Voltaire version: Le mieux est I "enneini du bien.

Random phraseology:

God forbid to see the Russian rebellion, meaningless and merciless.

Meaning:

Used literally.

Origin:

From the story (ch. 13) "The Captain's Daughter" (1836) by A. S. Pushkin (1799-1837). In the original: "God forbid to see a Russian rebellion, senseless and merciless!" The same thought, but more detailed, is contained in the "Missed Chapter" story, which was not included in the final edition of "The Captain's Daughter" and was preserved only in a draft manuscript: "God forbid to see a Russian rebellion - senseless and merciless. Those who plot us impossible coups, or young and do not know our people, or hard-hearted people, to whom someone else's little head is a half, and their own neck is a penny.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

dark matter hair 07.12.2015

Some astrophysicists enjoy stardom with their bold theories and public appearances. Stephen Hawking and Kip Thorne immediately come to mind (the latter also as the author of the idea and scientific consultant for the film "Interstellar"). However, most scientists in this field are little known to the general public, and they are engaged in looking into the dark: 27% of the mass of the universe is dark matter, and 68% is dark energy.

However, a new contender for the title of "star" of astrophysics has recently emerged. NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory researcher Gary Prezeau published an article in the prestigious Astrophysical Journal in which he hypothesized that the Earth and other planets in our galaxy are surrounded by theoretical filaments of dark matter, which he called hair. According to the scientist, if you can find the "roots" of this hair, you can detect dark matter.

Since attempts to detect dark matter empirically were unsuccessful, in the 1990s physicists began to build computer models that showed that dark matter could orbit galaxies in the form of streams of thin filaments. Preso developed the idea and modeled the conditions that occur when this dark matter passes through the solar system. What he found is reminiscent of light entering a telescope. Light comes in from all directions, but the rays from the star move in parallel lines, and only parallel strong light enters the focus of the telescope. According to Preso, the same thing happens with dark matter.

As the Earth rotates around the galaxy, it periodically passes through spirals of dark matter filaments, and due to the Earth's gravity, dark matter is focused in the same way as it happens with light in a telescope. But, since the Earth is not an ideal "lens", dark matter is not focused at one point, but forms streams or "hairs" at different distances from the Earth. Such streams must start somewhere, i.e. have "roots" in which the density of dark matter is a billion times higher than its average density. The Preso models show that they should be about a million kilometers from Earth.

However, no one knows where these roots are. One can only guess their number and calculate the probability that, at the correct distance from the Earth, a research spacecraft will fall into these "hairs" in a particular year.
