Golden age

Hesiod
Hesiod

Phraseologism: Golden age.

Meaning: The time of the highest prosperity, rise in any area of human activity, for example, "the XNUMXth century is the golden age of Russian literature", etc.

Origin: It is first encountered by the ancient Greek poet Hesiod (VIII-VII centuries BC) in the poem "Deeds and Days". As Hesiod writes, there was once a time when people lived without worries, without wars, without suffering. And he calls this time the “golden age”: “Those people lived like gods, with a calm // And a clear soul, // Not knowing grief, not knowing labors. // And sad old age // They did not dare to approach them .. According to legend, the ancient Roman emperor Commodus (180-192) ordered to call his age "golden". Sometimes the literature uses synonyms for the golden age - the "age of Astrea", less often - the "age of Kronos" and "the age of Saturn". Astrea is the goddess of justice among the ancient Greeks, who believed that in the "Iron Age" she left the earth and justice left the world with her. Thus ended the golden age, when truth and general contentment reigned. And since that time, the goddess Astrea has been in the sky in the form of a star shining in the constellation Virgo.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Healing session of an earthquake 13.11.2003

Many of the survivors of the catastrophic earthquake in 1999 in Turkey (7,4 on the Richter scale, thousands of deaths) still cannot come to their senses: they developed the so-called post-traumatic syndrome.

The victims do not find a place for themselves, do not sleep well, are afraid to stay indoors, and women who survived the earthquake are three times more likely than men to develop this nervous breakdown. Without treatment, only 10 percent of patients recover from such fears.

Turkish physician Metin Basoglu used a powerful geophysical installation - an earthquake simulator to treat post-traumatic syndrome. The platform, on which anti-seismic structures of buildings and machines are usually tested for strength, vibrates with a given amplitude.

An hour stay on such a simulator, as it turned out, cures 80-90 percent of patients, provided that they themselves hold a remote control with which they can regulate the duration and strength of the shocks.
