Phraseologism: Crafty courtier.
Meaning: About a hypocritical close associate of some high leader (jokingly ironic).
Origin: From the tragedy "Boris Godunov" (1831) by A. S. Pushkin (1799-1837). So Vorotynsky calls Vasily Shuisky (the scene "Kremlin Chambers").

Meaning:
Feast, fun on the eve of imminent disaster (book).
Origin:
The expression goes back to the Bible (The Book of the Prophet Daniel, 5), which tells that on the night of the capture of Babylon by the Persians, the Babylonian king Belshazzar arranged a magnificent feast. At the height of the fun, where precious vessels seized by the Babylonians in the Jerusalem temple served as table bowls, and the Babylonian gods were glorified, a mysterious hand inscribed incomprehensible words on the wall: "Mene, mene, tekel, uparsin" (26-28). The Babylonian sages could not read and interpret them. The Jewish sage Daniel read the inscription, he explained that the letters predict the death of the king. The prediction came true: on the same night, Belshazzar was killed, and his kingdom was conquered by Darius. |
