Phraseologism: A lone sail turns white.

Meaning: A symbol of loneliness or an ideal, pipe dream (poetic).

Origin: From the unfinished poem (parts 1, 15, stanza 19) "Andrei - Prince of Pereyaslavsky" by the Russian romantic writer, Decembrist officer Alexander Alexandrovich Bestuzhev (1797-1837), who wrote under the pseudonym "Marlinsky": "The lonely sail turns white, / / Like a swan's wing, / And the clear-eyed wayfarer is sad, / A quiver at his feet, an oar in his hand. The first edition of the poem was published (1828) in Moscow without the knowledge of the author. In 1832, M. Yu. Lermontov wrote his "Sail", which he began with a line from Bestuzhev-Marlinsky. And after the publication (1841) of the poem, this line - but already as Lermontov's - became very popular. In 1936, the Soviet writer Valentin Kataev uses this poetic image for the title of his story "The lonely sail turns white."
