The situation is worse than the governor's

Proverbs and sayings
Proverbs and sayings

Phraseologism: The situation is worse than the governor's.

Meaning: About an extremely difficult, unpleasant situation (jokingly).

Origin: There are several versions of the origin of the turnover: 1) the expression is taken from horse-breeding slang. The governor there was called a male probe, who was allowed to the mare to annoy her before mating with a thoroughbred sire. Phraseologism arose as a result of a punning rethinking by homonymous similarity, 2) the expression goes back to the decree of Paul I on the recovery of losses in the event of a mail robbery from the governor of this province, issued by him in 1800 in connection with a major mail robbery in the Kostroma province. The decree caused a real stir among the governors, 3. According to the author of the book "The Winged Word" (1930) S. G. Zaimonsky, this "image was inspired by the position of Don Quixote's squire. Sancho Panza, during his ill-fated governorship. The position of Russian governors is hardly was so bleak as to suggest such an aphorism."

Random phraseology:

When we were young and carried beautiful nonsense.

Meaning:

About the days of youth (jokingly-iron.).

Origin:

From the poem "When we were young ..." (1968) by the poetess Yunna Petrovna Moritz (b. 1937). The lines gained popularity thanks to the song "When We Were Young" (1976), written by Sergei Nikitin. The text of his song was composed of two poems by Yunna Moritz: "It's good to be young!" (1975) and "When we were young..." (1968).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

wooden chip 06.06.2015

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the US Department of Agriculture have developed a chip that uses cellulose, a substance obtained by processing wood (cellulose is also used to make paper), on a substrate that houses semiconductor transistors.

According to the project leader, professor of electrical engineering Zhenqiang Ma (Zhenqiang Ma), the substrate in the chip accounts for the bulk of the material. So the researchers are talking about developing a chip "virtually entirely made of wood."

Cellulose fibers, which the researchers managed to obtain, have the necessary strength to accommodate transistors. However, the surface of the material is not flat enough for this purpose. Moreover, cellulose well absorbs moisture from the surrounding air and as a result swells - which will certainly lead to the destruction of the microcircuit.

In order to make cellulose suitable for use as a substrate, the research team applied an epoxy composition to it. This helped to solve both problems at once - both the problem of uneven surface and the problem of swelling, said Ma.

"The main advantage of cellulose fiber over polymers is that it is made from plant materials, while most other polymers are made from petroleum products. Biopolymers are safer for the environment, they rot quickly and are easily recycled," the project leader explained.

In addition to using the new material as a substrate in a chip, the researchers demonstrated a way to place a much larger number of transistors on a cellulose substrate compared to traditional semiconductor industry technologies.

In particular, on a substrate with an area of 30 sq. m, the researchers were able to place 1,5 thousand transistors made of gallium arsenide, while usually only eight to 40 transistors are placed on such an area. According to the project participants, this method can significantly reduce the amount of toxic electronic waste accumulated on Earth.
