In devices based on digital microcircuits and microprocessors with autonomous power supply, batteries of galvanic cells must provide a stabilized voltage of 5 V. To achieve this in the simplest way - using six 1,5V cells and an integral stabilizer KR142EN5A - is unprofitable both energetically and economically. A simple stabilized converter is proposed, which makes it possible to obtain a voltage of 5 V at a load current of up to 120 mA. Its input voltage can be in the range of 2 ... 3,5 V (two galvanic cells). The efficiency at an input voltage of 3 V and the maximum load current is approximately 75%.

The converter circuit is shown in the figure. A blocking oscillator is assembled on the transistor VT2. Winding I of transformer T1 also performs the function of a storage choke, and from winding II to the base of transistor VT2 a positive feedback signal is received. The pulses that appear on the collector of this transistor charge the capacitors C1, C4 through the diode VD5, the voltage on which is the output. It depends on the repetition rate and duty cycle of the blocking generator pulses, which, in turn, depend on the collector current of the transistor VT1, which recharges the capacitor C3 in the intervals between pulses.

Voltage converter 5 volts. Schematic diagram.

After the blocking generator is supplied with a supply voltage, as the capacitor C2 is charged through the resistor R1, the collector current of the transistor VT1, the frequency of the generated pulses and the output voltage of the converter increase. But as soon as the latter exceeds the sum of the stabilization voltages of the zener diode VD2 and the opening of the transistor VT3, part of the current flowing through the resistor R1 and the base of the transistor VT1 will branch into the collector circuit of the opened transistor VT3. This will reduce the pulse frequency. Thus, the output voltage will be stabilized. Trimmer resistor R3 allows you to set it equal to 5 V.

Transistor VT2 - KT819 with any letter index, KT805A or KT817 also with any index. In the latter case, the output power of the converter will be slightly less. The efficiency of the device will increase if a germanium diode D1 is used as VD310. The transformer is made of a DPM-1,0 choke with an inductance of 51 μH. The winding on it is used as the primary one.

A feedback winding (II) of 14 turns of wire with a diameter of 0,31 mm in enamel insulation is wound on top of it. Capacitor C3 must be a metal film capacitor of the K71-K78 series. A ceramic capacitor is undesirable here due to the low temperature stability of the capacitance. The device is not critical to the types of other parts.

 The converter is mounted on a board made of double-sided foil fiberglass. The foil on one side of the board is left intact and serves as a common wire. Several samples collected by the author did not require any adjustment, except for the exact setting of the output voltage.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Pressure sensor Infineon DPS422 27.03.2019

The DPS422 from Infineon is a digital barometric pressure sensor with a built-in precision temperature meter. Pressure measurement is carried out using a capacitive sensor, which guarantees high accuracy over a wide range of operating temperatures. With a miniature 2,0x2,5x0,73mm package and low power consumption of 1,7uA, the new DPS422 is ideal for battery-powered miniature IoT devices.

Measurement of pressure and temperature takes place using a 24-bit ADC. Measurement results can be obtained via the I2C or SPI interface, and if necessary, you can use separate interrupt lines and an internal FIFO buffer for 32 values. Each sensor is calibrated during production. The individual spread is stored as fixed correction factors, which are available through internal registers.

Features of DPS422:

miniature package 8-pin LGA, 2,0x2,5x0,73 mm (typ.);
operating range: pressure: 300...1200 hPa, temperature: -40...85°C;
resolution: +- 0,005 hPa (or +-5 cm);
relative accuracy: +-0,06 hPa (or +-50 cm);
absolute accuracy: +- 1 hPa (or +-8 m);
temperature measurement accuracy: +- 0,4°C;
measurement dependence on temperature: < 0,5Pa/K;
measurement time: 27,6 ms for standard mode (16x). 3,6ms minimum;
average consumption: 1,7 µA for pressure, 2 µA for temperature;
