Single-car diesel train Kawasaki Heavy Industries

13.08.2021

Japanese Kawasaki Heavy Industries has created a single-car diesel train, which in the future is planned to be adapted for hybrid traction with a battery.

The DEC700 series diesel train prototype was developed for the Japanese passenger carrier JR West. This month JR West plans to conduct its dynamic tests.

Currently, the train is tested only with a diesel engine, but next year it is scheduled to be tested with lithium-ion storage units with a capacity of 15,2 kWh.

The DEC700 series car with a length of 20 meters can accommodate up to 90 passengers, in the future it should replace the diesel trains of the KiHa40 series, produced in 1977-1983 by Japanese Fuji Heavy Industries (now Subaru) and Niigata Tekko.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

The robot anticipates human actions 04.06.2013

The robot, developed at the Cornell Robotics Lab, could be the perfect assistant: it doesn't need to be told to "open the fridge, I'll put a plate in" or "add more beer." Surprisingly, the robot itself is able to assess the situation and act proactively, "kindly" warning all human intentions.

This is indeed a great achievement, since it was previously difficult to take into account the many variables that arise when a person, for example, gets up from the table with a plate of food and intentions incomprehensible to the robot. Nevertheless, engineers from Cornell University managed to solve this problem: now it is enough to silently hint at your desire, and the robot is in a hurry to fulfill it.

The robot is equipped with manipulator arms and a wheeled chassis that provides freedom of movement on a flat surface. The robot's "eyes" are a Microsoft Kinect stereo camera that uses a video database of typical human movements. For example, a robot analyzes how a person interacts with objects on a table. If a person pours a drink from a bottle into a mug and then brings it to his mouth, the robot understands that his owner is drinking and the empty mug needs to be periodically filled. In the same way, the robot “understands” that after the owner has poured cereal and milk into the plate, the food bags can be put back.

The essence of forecasting technology is to choose the most probable scenario. When any movement begins, for example, the owner with a plate in his hands gets up from the table, the robot begins to analyze the possible trajectories of the owner’s movement and, accordingly, his intentions. If the owner goes to the refrigerator, the robot opens the door; if the owner goes to the sink, it turns on the water, gives a towel, etc.

During the experiments, the robot made correct predictions of human intentions 82% of the time 1 second ahead, 71% of the time 3 seconds ahead, and 57% of the time 10 seconds ahead. This is not as small as it seems, because we do not perform actions instantly. For example, if the path to the refrigerator takes 10 seconds, then the robot will have 1 second to understand our intention and as many as 9 seconds to drive up to the refrigerator and open the door, that is, wait for the robot to be "courtesy" while standing with a pot of soup in its hands, it won't take long.

Of course, initially the robot must be taught and not expected from him "understanding" on the first day of operation. But our home activities are not so diverse, so a couple of months can be spent on training. But then you will have a real caring and tireless robot servant, literally predicting every action of the household. Such robots in 5-10 years will be able to provide serious assistance to people with disabilities and just those who are exhausted from household chores. The robot itself should not be very expensive, because its "brain" is actually made from a game console, and its "body" is even simpler than a Segway electric scooter. Of course, some safety systems will need to be added to protect the robot from falls, collisions with people and prevent dangerous movements by manipulators, but similar systems have already been developed for industrial worker robots.
