Play for aortic rupture
Mandelstam O.E.
Phraseologism: Play for aortic rupture.
Meaning: About the acting game, in which the artist "gives all the best" completely.
Origin: From the poem "For Paganini the long-fingered ..." (1935) by Osip Emilievich Mandelstam (1891-1938): "Play for aortic rupture!"
Random phraseology:
White slaves. White blacks.
Meaning:
Anyone exploited.
Origin:
The expression "white slaves", sometimes replaced in our country by the expression "white negroes", was applied in England, by analogy with the negroes exploited by the planters, to the workers of large industrial enterprises exploited by the capitalists. On the continent, the expression has spread since 1845, when F. Engels in the 6th chapter of the book "The Condition of the Working Class in England" wrote: "The humane Tories were right in calling factory workers white slaves" (K. Marx and F. Engels, Soch., vol. Ill, M.-L. 1930, p. 470). In the same 1845, this expression was picked up by the German novelist Adolf Wilck, who published the novel "White Slaves". This expression has become firmly established in the everyday life of socialist writers. |

Artificial leather for touch emulation
15.04.2024
In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men
14.04.2024
The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
Random news from the Archive Manometer in the eye
18.07.2010
Glaucoma, increased intraocular fluid pressure, is one of the most common causes of blindness. For prevention, it is necessary to measure intraocular pressure from time to time, but in some cases it would be good to monitor it continuously throughout the day.
The Swiss company "Sensimed" has begun production of a manometer built into a contact lens. The miniature device includes a corneal tension sensor, a microprocessor that processes the measurement results, and a radio transmitter. The data from the transmitter is picked up by a receiver placed in the patient's breast pocket.
Trials of the new ophthalmologist's assistant showed that out of 50 patients who wore an eye pressure gauge, more than a third, according to him, had to change the course of treatment.
