Homer
Homer

Phraseologism: Homeric laughter.

Meaning: Deafening, uncontrollable, as well as sarcastic, caustic laughter.

Origin: The primary source is the poems "Odyssey" (Song 8:326, Song 20:346) and "Iliad" (Song 1:599) by the legendary poet of Ancient Greece Homer (IX century BC). They contain descriptions of divine laughter, which is in no way inferior to divine anger in its power and irresistibility. For example, in the Iliad: Laughter unspeakable was erected by the blessed inhabitants of the sky, // Seeing how Hephaestus fusses around the hall with a goblet.

Random phraseology:

Zirlich-manirlich.

Meaning:

Excessive ceremony, mannerism, affectation, ceremonial, affectation person (disapproved).

Origin:

The turnover arose on the basis of the German words "zierlich", "manierlich" - "graceful", "courteous". The words are taken from a German song ridiculing simperingly ceremonious behavior.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Lighting LEDs with an efficiency of 135 lm/W 01.04.2014

Toshiba Electronics Europe (TEE) announced the launch of two new series of white LEDs: TL1L2 - in the form of a 3,5x3,5mm lens with a power of 1W and TL3GB - a flat 3x3mm element with a power of 0,6W. Both series can be used as light sources for general lighting systems (including electric lamps, main and spotlights, ceiling lights), as well as street and projector lighting.

Using Gallium Nitride on Silicon (GaN-on-Si) technology, the new white LEDs have a low forward voltage (VF) to reduce lighting costs.

Forward voltage values for LEDs: 2,85V at 350mA (TL1L2 series) and 5,76V at 100mA (TL3GB series). The luminous efficiency of the TL1L2 series is 135 lm/W (5000 K, Ra70) at an operating power of 1 W (If=350 mA), while the TL3GB series is 118 lm/W (5000 K, Ra80) at an operating power of 0,6 W (If =100 mA). For LEDs, there are six color temperature options from 2700 K to 6500 K.

Serial production of LEDs of both series will begin at the end of March.
