Solar panels on indium phosphide 06.02.2013

Researchers at the University of Lund in Sweden have found a way to create efficient and cheap solar panels from indium phosphide nanowires. Scientists emphasize that for the first time they managed to use nanowires to produce fully functional solar cells. In fact, nanowire solar cells are being researched all over the world. However, it was Swedish scientists who were able to create solar cells with an efficiency of 13,8%.

The Swedish nanowires are made from the semiconductor material indium phosphide. They work like antennas that absorb sunlight and generate electricity. Nanowires are assembled on a substrate of one square millimeter - 4 million on each. At the same time, solar cells made of nanowires produce several times more energy per unit area than modern silicon cells.

Due to their high efficiency, nanowire solar panels can provide clean energy production with low installation and maintenance costs. Calculations show that a nanowire solar panel in the form of a thin film produces the same amount of energy as a silicon panel, but at the same time takes up 90% less area.

Currently, Swedish scientists are working to improve the efficiency of solar cells based on indium phosphide nanowires. Also, work is underway to combine various types of semiconductor materials to effectively use the widest possible part of the solar spectrum.
