Titan's atmosphere reproduced in the laboratory 24.08.2021

Among the satellites of the planets of the solar system, Titan ranks second in size, second only to Ganymede. The celestial body revolving around Saturn has a dense atmosphere, consisting mainly of nitrogen with an admixture of methane.

Beneath the atmosphere at temperatures around -180°C, rivers of liquid ethane and methane flow on Titan. As in the Earth's atmosphere, on Titan, gases evaporate from the surface, condense, and shed as precipitation.

Conditions on Titan somewhat resemble Earth before life began. Saturn's moon can serve as a massive laboratory for research into the formation of organic matter. The difficulty lies in the fact that from a relatively close distance, Titan was studied only once - with the help of the Cassini space probe.

A team of scientists managed to reproduce the atmospheric conditions of Titan in the laboratory. During the experiment, they first studied how acetonitrile and propionitrile interact with each other under extreme conditions. According to astronomical observations, these organic substances are often found in the atmosphere of Titan.

It turned out that these compounds crystallize differently at low temperatures in the presence of each other. This significantly affects the processes occurring in the atmosphere of Titan and what minerals can be found by researchers on the surface of Saturn's moon during further study.

One of the authors of the study, Tomche Runczewski, explained that this is not the final model of Titan's atmosphere. It does not contain all the substances known to researchers. As Saturn's moon is explored, researchers will be able to model conditions on it with increasing accuracy.
