Focus Description:

The performer shuffles the cards and, without looking at them, holding the deck with two fingers, throws half of the cards onto the illusion table. He shows the other half to the audience and asks them to remember the last card, which he himself does not see. Then he throws these cards on the table, and then asks one of the spectators to shuffle them.

Having taken the cards, the performer counts them, puts them in a deck and shows the last card to the audience.

"Is this your card?" - asks the performer. "No," the audience replied.

Then the performer, without looking at the deck, draws a card, places it face down on the table and asks one of the spectators to cover the card with his palm.

Then he counts: one, two, three - and, blowing into the deck, asks to open the card lying on the table. The spectator raises his palm, opens the card, and the performer shows it to the audience. This is the card they remember.

Focus secret:

The deck of cards in this trick is the most ordinary, without any secret devices. When the performer takes it from the table, then naturally he has a desire to shuffle the cards. At this moment he can carry on a conversation with the audience. Then, taking the deck with two fingers, he throws half the cards on the table, showing the last card to the spectators, and asks if the last card is clearly visible to everyone.

"I repeat again," says the performer.

He takes all the cards from the table and shuffles them. To avoid any suspicion, you must first shuffle the deck, holding the cards face down. Then, momentarily turning the cards towards you with the “picture” and continuing to shuffle them, you need to simultaneously remember the last card. Now you can safely begin demonstrating the trick.

Taking the deck with the thumb and middle fingers of his right hand, the performer firmly holds the bottom part of the deck with the last card known to him, and throws the top part onto the table (Fig. 69, A). The last card remaining in your hand must be shown to the audience. They will remember it well, after which these cards can be thrown on the table.

Having invited one of the spectators, the performer asks him to carefully shuffle the cards. Taking them then, he shuffles them a little himself, and then counts them, moving them one at a time from hand to hand. In fact, in this way the performer is looking for the last card. Having found it, he again puts all the cards in the deck so that the desired card is the second. Then the performer immediately pulls this card down a little from under the first one (Fig. 69, B).

Grasping the deck halfway with your left hand, you need to show the audience the first card. Their reaction will be immediate: they will shout that this card is not the one they remember, and will decide that the performer was mistaken, that the trick was not a success.

Then the performer draws a second card from the deck, prepared by himself, places it on the table face down and asks the spectator to cover the card with his palm, while he himself moves away a little from the table and, lifting the deck, counts to three. Then, blowing on the cards, he invites the spectator to open the card lying on the table under his palm. Now it is without a doubt her.

Having finished demonstrating the trick, you can immediately proceed to the second option. It is performed with the same deck of cards and serves as a continuation of the previous one. The second option is demonstrated in the same sequence as the first. The slight difference is in the last step. Having found the last card in the deck that is already known to the performer, he places it second from the bottom, since in this case he holds the deck “face down” to himself. Having prepared the deck, he places it on his left palm and begins laying out the cards, as for solitaire or as is usually dealt to four players.

But the layout is as follows: four cards are placed crosswise on the left side of the table and four cards are also placed on the right side. Moreover, one of the four cards laid out also includes a well-known card. It's best to put it in the top four so you don't forget where it is. The cards should be laid out face down, pulling one card at a time from the middle of the deck, then from the top and bottom, so as not to arouse any suspicion. The noticed card is placed fourth in the first four and remember that its place is the bottom. Now you need to lay out the second four on the right side of the table. Then, blowing on the cards remaining in the hand, the performer offers to check them and says that the noticed card is no longer in the deck, it is on the table. Spectators check the cards handed to them and make sure that the noticed card is really not in the deck.

Now the performer invites the audience to choose any four cards - left or right, without deliberately saying “take” or “leave”. If the audience immediately chooses the left one, then the performer pretends that he meant “leave” and takes the four cards lying on the right side of the table.

Then he asks: “Do you want two cards vertically or horizontally?” The audience responds: “Vertical.” You leave them on the table and take two cards horizontally. Now the performer says that one of the remaining cards is yours. Which one do they want to see: top or bottom? Spectators say that the top one. The performer takes the top card, throws it into the deck and tells the audience: “The remaining bottom card is yours.” One of the spectators takes it from the table and shows it to the audience. This is truly the card that viewers remember.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

fresh water from the air 09.09.2013

Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in collaboration with colleagues from Chile, have developed a device that collects drinking water from the air. This is not a unique human invention: in some of the planet's driest regions, plants and animals have uniquely adapted to water scarcity. In places where precipitation is extremely rare or even non-existent, animals and plants draw water directly from the air, and more specifically the fog that drifts from the oceans.

Scientists were able to repeat this "trick", only on a much larger scale, and created an installation that is capable of extracting up to 10% of moisture from the fog. Similar installations are already operating in 17 countries around the world, but their efficiency rarely reaches even 2%.

Conventional systems for collecting water from air consist of a vertical network made of polyolefin fibers. These networks are cheap, but inefficient, since even under optimal conditions they can extract only 2% of the moisture from the fog.

Specialists from MIT were able to choose the ideal network parameters and dramatically increase its efficiency. First of all, it is necessary to replace synthetic fibers with a stainless steel net with threads 2-3 times the thickness of a human hair. In addition, a special coating must be applied to the net, which allows droplets to slide more easily through the net and enter the water collection chute before the wind blows them away and carries them away with the rest of the fog. At the same time, it is important that the mesh size of the network is 2 times larger than the diameter of the fibers from which this network is made.

A prototype of the new device has been tested in coastal mountains on the edge of the Atacama Desert. With a network area of 1 sq. m. managed to get several liters of drinking water per day. Moreover, as calculations have shown, at certain times of the year such a device can collect up to 12 liters of fresh water per day. If you use a network placed in several rows one after another, then you can collect much more moisture than the calculated 10%.
