Focus Description:

The performer enters the stage in a Chinese robe and shows some kind of small trick that does not require sudden movements. Following this, he takes a large Chinese handkerchief and, going to the middle of the stage, shows it from both sides. Holding the handkerchief in front of him, the performer crouches slightly, pushing his open arms forward. Then, stepping back two steps, he leaves some object in front of him, covered with the same scarf. Slowly comes to the side and removes the handkerchief.

The audience sees that in the middle of the stage is a large barrel full of water. The magician lowers his hands into the water, proving that the barrel is filled to the brim (Fig. 170).

Focus secret:

For the number, use half of the barrel without a bottom. It can tightly fit the figure of the performer and is easily hidden under his wide robe (Fig. 171, A). At the top of the half-barrel, a hoop that folds in half (Fig. 171, B) is made from the inside, to the edges of which a "children's" oilcloth or thin sheet rubber is firmly attached. When the hoop is opened, the oilcloth forms a basin, where the required amount of water is poured. If you now fold the hoop in half, turn one half of it towards the barrel (indicated by an arrow in the figure), then this part will fit snugly against the concave half of the barrel, and the poured water will be in an oilcloth bag. In this position, the barrel is put on the magician with the help of special holders, fastened close to the body, covering the chest and stomach with it, then a wide robe is put on top, so that the barrel is invisible to the audience.

Entering the stage, the artist tries to keep at ease and shows a small focus, without making sudden movements. After demonstrating the handkerchief, he stops and squats slightly to be able to put the barrel on the floor, unobtrusively open the robe under the cover of a large handkerchief, unfasten the holders and open the hoop, folded in half, which rotates on a hinge.

Pulling off the handkerchief from the barrel, the performer dips his hand into the water (see Fig. 170), showing the audience that the barrel is full to the brim.

The climate of Germany is milder than ours, but even there in winter there are big problems with the removal of snow and ice from the streets.

Railconcrete is testing a heating system for bus stops in Chemnitz. In the concrete slab on which the stop pavilion stands, coils are built into the edge of the sidewalk and the roadway, through which non-freezing liquid is pumped from a well drilled in the ground. The depth of the well depends on the area to be heated.

A heat pump (a device capable of concentrating and pumping heat from where there is little to where it is even less) maintains a temperature sufficient for melting. The sensors turn on the heat pump when the concrete temperature drops below zero and turn it off when the temperature rises. Even with heavy snowfall, the sidewalk in this place remains clean.

A larger trial is planned for winter 2005/06 at a large number of Dresden bus stops. The experiment should show what is cheaper - to introduce such systems or to remove snow and ice in the usual way, with sprinkling of salt.
