EFFECTIVE FOCUSES AND THEIR CLUES Sawing. Focus secret Directory / Spectacular tricks and their clues Focus Description: This illusion is interesting because it can be shown with "exposure" and thus make the act funny and fun. A small flat couch-stand is rolled onto the stage, on which a small oblong box is placed. You are an assistant. She is placed in a box and closed with a lid, but the box is short, and the assistant sticks her head and hands out of the box, through the cutouts made in it. On the other hand, she sticks her legs through. The slits made in advance for this purpose can be clamped by small shields moving into them. Now viewers see the assistant's head, arms and legs, clamped by shields at the ends of the box. The performer asks the assistant to move first one arm, then the other, head and legs, which she does (Fig. 142).
Then the assistants come up with a two-handed cross-cut saw and begin to saw the box crosswise, in half (Fig. 143).
Having sawed the box, insert two panels into the cross-section and move both halves of the box apart to some distance from each other. Viewers see two disconnected halves of the box on the couch, in one of them there is a cheerfully smiling head with moving arms, and in the other there are moving legs (Fig. 144).
Then both halves are moved together and the middle, separating panels are removed; after this, the shields that clamp the assistant’s head and hands are removed, and she immediately puts them inside the box. The lid is opened slightly, the girl jumps out of the box and bows to the audience. At the same time, viewers see how the legs at the end of the box continue to move nervously. The performer and the assistant do not see anything at first, but then they notice and are very embarrassed, and a voice is heard from the couch: “Legs, they forgot to free their legs.” The embarrassed assistants, under the destroying gaze of the performer, free their legs, remove the box, and the audience sees that the legs are sticking out of the couch , and then the second assistant appears and gets out and, noticing that there are spectators in front of her, quickly runs backstage. The performer is puzzled. “Well, sometimes it does,” he says, confused. The couch and box are removed backstage. Props: Box in two parts. Couch with a secret device. Cross-cut two-handed ordinary saw. The box is shown in Fig. 142 and 143. Its shape can be arbitrary. The dimensions we provide are approximate; they are by no means obligatory and depend entirely on the height and build of the illusion performers. The box consists of two separate sections (see Fig. 144). Each of them is approximately 65-80 cm long, 50 cm wide and XNUMX cm high. A wall shield is inserted into the sides of the box facing the middle, where the cut is made, which will cover the sides of the cut and each box from the inside. The shield completely isolates both compartments from each other. This is done in order not to spoil the box: only the plywood that is nailed to both sides and the lid is sawn. To avoid damaging the box, iron strips (like plywood) are also placed on the cut points. For the head, arms and legs, the assistants make cutouts in the walls and insert shields into them, with which these parts of the body are clamped and released outward. In the left box, a large hole is cut in the bottom through which the legs of the second assistant should pass. This exhausts all the design instructions for the manufacture of equipment for the illusion. Of course, the inside of the box should be painted with dark paint (a black “stain” - mordant - is good for this purpose). It is primed on top, and some kind of drawing is made on the background painted with oil paint. The dimensions of the couch with a secret device for the second assistant depend on the drawer, and the shape of the couch is shown in the pictures. It is very convenient: the protruding corners on the sides seem to reduce its actual height. The height of 25 cm inside the couch is quite sufficient for an assistant. The width and length inside are slightly greater than the width and length of the box itself. The couch is made from slats and covered with plywood (upholstered with leatherette if desired). The corners on the sides, concealing the height, should not protrude too much. The couch should look simple. On one side (in our pictures on the left) in the top board there is a cut with a door where the second assistant can freely crawl through. Cutouts are made for her legs. Four legs on casters are attached to the couch. This makes it easy to roll it onto the stage along with the second assistant inside and quickly put it back behind the scenes. Focus secret: The secret of the illusion lies in the fact that there is a second assistant inside the couch (the first one occupies a certain position inside the apparatus during its demonstration), as well as in the “replacement” of the legs of the first assistant with the legs of the second. Before demonstrating the act behind the scenes, they carefully check the prepared box, making sure that the plywood for sawing is wide enough, and that the boxes are at least 6 cm apart from each other: then the saw will not touch their walls. The second assistant, wearing exactly the same stockings and shoes as the first, is placed inside the couch and carefully closed with a lid. They put a box on top of the couch - and our apparatus is ready for the audience. On stage, as soon as the first assistant is placed in the box, the second immediately sticks out her legs and they are passed through the openings of the box. The audience, quite understandably, mistakes them for the legs of the first assistant. The first one immediately sticks her head and arms through the cuts. Helpers clamp the head, arms and legs with shields that fit into the grooves of the cutouts. At this time, the first assistant quickly takes the position shown in Fig. 184, making sure that the dress does not fall into the slit. For greater insurance, she rests her feet on a specially made bar inside the box. This quite reliably protects her from the saw (make sure during rehearsals that the girl’s legs are located no closer than 10 cm from the saw). The assistant rests her feet on the bar, and when, after cutting, the spread boxes are put back together and the shields are taken out, she immediately straightens and stretches out to her full height in the box, then, as soon as her head and arms are freed, she quickly leaves the box. The assistants “forget” to release the legs of the second assistant. They are seen by the public, who then guess the secret of the illusion.
If you do not want to reveal the secret of the device, then first of all you need to free the second assistant’s legs from the cutouts, which she quickly hides inside the couch. Some illusionists, when performing this act, put their assistants' feet in specially made hard colored boots. Viewers see how the girl puts her feet in boots through the hole in the wall of the box and how they are clamped. She immediately takes her feet out of the boots, and the other one puts them on and moves them. At the end of the trick, the second pulls out her legs, and the first threads hers into the boots. We believe that it is better not to make special shoes so as not to draw the attention of viewers to them. We advise you to show this illusion cheerfully, trying to be as relaxed as possible and accompany all the actions of your assistants with witty remarks. Author: Vadimov A.A.
