Focus Description:

One of the spectators deals sixteen cards as you instruct him, and is left with one card, which he remembers and puts back on the deck. Another spectator repeats these actions and remembers the card he chose. Both shuffle their sixteen cards. The magician unfolds sixteen cards in a fan and places two of them on the table. Two spectators call their cards - and the magician turns over two cards: they are those that the spectators have chosen.

Focus secret:

1. Take the deck by quickly looking at the bottom card. Let it be the queen of hearts. Perform fake shuffles to get her on top. Give the deck to a spectator, let's call her Clara, and ask her to deal sixteen cards face down on the table. The bottom card of these sixteen will be the Queen of Hearts.

2. Collect the cards and say that you want to check if they are exactly sixteen, and again deal them to the table, counting from one to sixteen. The top card will again be the Queen of Hearts. Take the cards and line them up on the table, taking a quick look at the card that is now on the bottom. Let's say it's a triple of clubs. Now you know the top and bottom cards.

3. Extend the cards to Vlad and ask him to deal them face down on the table as follows: the top card on the table, the next one on the bottom of the pile, the next on the table, the next one on the bottom of the pile, etc., until there is no one card. Ask him to look at it, memorize it, and place it face down on top of the pile. It will be a triple of clubs if Vlad dealt the cards correctly. You must follow this closely.

4. When Vlad is done, push the cards towards Clara (aligning them if necessary) and ask her to do the same as Vlad. She will discover - if she does everything right - that the last card is the Queen of Hearts. Ask her to memorize the card accurately and put it on top of the pile. Now ask Clara to shuffle the pile well, and then pass it to Vlad so that he shuffles it too. Then take the stack back and fan it out so you can see the cards. Take the three of clubs and place it face down in front of Vlad. Place the Queen of Hearts in front of Clara.

5. Remind Clara and Vlad that from the shuffled deck, Clara dealt sixteen cards, from which she and Vlad chose a card at random, and then the deck of sixteen cards was again shuffled by each of them. Say: "Nevertheless, if the magician's instinct does not fail me, I think I chose the very cards that you thought of. So, which card did you choose, Vlad?" Vlad will answer: "Three of clubs." - "Ata, Clara?" Clara will say: "Queen of hearts."

6. Ask Clara and Vlad to look at the cards in front of them and make sure they are the ones they have chosen.

Bacteria on nanofiber electrodes could purify wastewater 15.07.2017

Scientists from Cornell University have developed an innovative competitive material for wastewater treatment of contaminants. The new development is based on carbon nanoelectrodes with a conductive coating of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene.

The electrodes were electrospun from carbon nanofibers and coated with an electrically conductive polymer called PEDOT. After this coating is applied to the electrode, a layer of electrically active Geobacter sulfurreducens bacteria begins to grow on it, which produce an electric current and transfer electrons to the next electrode.

Bacteria feed on pollution from sewage and produce electricity, and the conductive nanofiber creates a favorable environment for them.

The new material will be able to significantly reduce the cost of producing electrodes and thereby make the water treatment process more accessible.

In the future, bacteria sitting on electrodes will be able to capture contaminants directly from the water flowing past them and recycle them. This technology will allow wastewater treatment plants to take up less space and increase productivity.

Scientists have created a carbon nanofiber using electrospin and carbonization. The nanofiber becomes visible to the eye after a few hours of electrospin.

Carbon nanofiber was used in the development because it has high porosity and is biologically compatible with bacteria. The addition of PEDOT improved the efficiency of the electrode.
