There are quite a few mechanical devices for "disappearing" various objects from the magician's hands. Some of them are extremely difficult to make on your own, so we will only describe here those that you can easily make yourself.

On fig. 8, A shows a small cloth bag with an elastic band tucked into the outer edge; another one is attached to its bottom - a lady's hat elastic, which has a safety pin at the opposite end. How to use such mechanics, we have already they said. This mechanic is intended to "disappear" small objects (such as coins or balls).

On fig. 8, B you see a device for the "disappearance" of scarves. From the mechanics described above, it differs only in the device of the sideboard bag, which has the shape of an oblong cap. Its length is about 6 cm, diameter is 2-2,5 cm, a metal ring is sewn into its outer hole.

However, we advise you to use not cloth caps for scarves, but special sleeves made of papier-mâché (Fig. 8, D), this is more convenient. They are made as follows: drive a long nail into a small board, and around it the shape necessary for the sleeve is molded from plasticine or clay (Fig. 8, B). It is coated with petroleum jelly or other technical grease and glued over it with pieces of finely torn paper soaked in glue in 3-4 layers. It is better to take paper in two colors - then it is more convenient to count the layers and glue them more evenly.

After drying, the sleeve is removed from the mold, but since it is narrowed to the mouth (so that the handkerchief hidden in it cannot fall out), it has to be cut with a sharp knife along the side, and then the halves are again glued with strips of paper, this is clearly seen in the figure. The sleeve removed from the mold is skinned with fine sandpaper and painted inside and out with oil paint to match the color of your hands, twice. So that the paint does not shine, it is sanded.

A button with a ring is tied to one end of the elastic band (see figure), and the elastic band is pulled through the sleeve through a puncture in its bottom. The button inside the sleeve is sealed with a wad of crumpled loose paper, well moistened with glue. It remains only to tie a pin to the opposite end of the elastic band - and our mechanics is ready.

A few words about "thimble fingers". We consider it appropriate to talk about these simple devices here, since their manufacture is the same as that of the sleeve described above. The only difference lies in the form on which they are made.

The form is made in the following way. Lightly lubricating the thumb of the right hand with petroleum jelly, tightly stick around it with a lump of plasticine (Fig. 9, A). Towards the finger (see figure), pierce the plasticine with a not very sharp stick and carefully remove it from the finger; close the hole pierced with a stick with plasticine and pour a solution of gypsum or alabaster diluted to the density of liquid sour cream into the resulting cast from your thumb. Until the mortar hardens, insert a nail into it, as shown in fig. 9, B.

After hardening, remove the cast plaster mold from your finger from the plasticine and fix it with a nail in a wooden stand, in the hole there for this (Fig. 9, B). Then, having greased the form with technical fat, make two thimble fingers from papier-mâché (as mentioned above); one short one is one phalanx long of your finger, the second one is two phalanges long (Fig. 9, D and 9, E). The thimbles are dyed solid and skinned, as was said before; nails are painted on them, which are varnished.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Photovoltaic glass in a residential building 12.09.2023

Panasonic has announced the launch of the world's first long-term demonstration tests of perovskite photovoltaic glass integrated into residential windows. These tests will continue until the end of next year in the city of Fujisawa. Panasonic photovoltaic windows are able to generate electricity while remaining clear or tinted.

These photovoltaic windows provide reliable protection against power supply interruptions, especially during the frequent natural disasters experienced in Japan. In addition, they provide environmentally friendly energy supply for residential and office buildings. The development of photovoltaic glass with the function of generating electricity was announced by Panasonic in 2020 and is now ready for mass production.

According to Panasonic, its perovskite photovoltaic glass has the highest efficiency of any solar cell of its type, reaching 17,9% for cells larger than 800 square centimeters. In terms of efficiency, they compete with silicon solar panels, but have the advantages of transparency and lightness.

In practice, photovoltaic glazing will be tested on a small area. In the pilot house, the company will install photovoltaic windows on one of the loggias with windows oriented to the southeast. The glazing dimensions will be 3876 mm wide and 950 mm high.
