Focus Description:

Twist the scarf with a tourniquet and lay it on the table. Cross your arms over your chest. Continuing to hold them in this position, bend over to the table and take one end of the handkerchief alternately with each hand. After the hands are separated, a knot will turn out by itself in the middle of the scarf.

Using topological terminology, we can say that the hands of the viewer, his body and handkerchief form a closed curve in the form of a "three-leafed" knot. When spreading the hands, the knot only moves from the hands to the handkerchief.

An entertaining variation of this puzzle can be demonstrated with a cord, scarf, or tie. Lay, for example, a tie on the table as shown in fig. 22. Take end B with your right hand and ask the spectator to watch closely as you tie the knot. Pass now the left hand under the end of B with the palm down (Fig. 23), and then turn it back, as shown in Fig. 24, and pick up end A. After you spread your arms, you will have a knot on the tie.

Focus The problem of tying knots

Oddly enough, but such movements are quite difficult to reproduce. You can show the trick over and over again to those present, but when they try to do it themselves, the knots will not be tied.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Self-healing synthetic material 28.03.2001

Scientists at the University of Illinois (USA) announced the invention of a new synthetic material capable of self-healing.

In the course of research in the field of composites, scientists came up with the idea of filling them with microscopic capsules containing a special filling substance and a catalyst. When the smallest cracks appear in the material, the capsules burst and release a substance that fills the resulting space. As soon as the filling substance reacts with the catalyst, polymerization occurs and the damaged area is repaired.

In the tests carried out, the mechanical characteristics of the material were restored by 75%. Currently, scientists are experimenting with various composites, which include from 15 to 30 capsules per square centimeter. Experiments show that products made from this material are many times more durable than those made from a conventional composite.

The new material is not yet ready for industrial use. However, experts are already predicting its use in various fields - from the production of tennis rackets and artificial joints to spacecraft.
