Focus Description:

A magician shows one column of text cut from a newspaper. Folding the clipping in half, he cuts off the fold, receiving in return two strips of paper. When he unfolds the two separate strips, he sees that the newspaper column has magically been restored to form a single whole!

It seems as if the ends of the strips are connected. Puzzled by this repetition of events, the magician repeats the procedure: he again cuts the newspaper column, this time in the center and at an angle. To everyone's surprise, the paper is restored again. When it is unfolded, a fold is visible in the center of the column, and at an angle! Finally, the column of text cut from the paper is cut again and restored to its original form.

Focus secret:

A. Use scissors to cut out a single column in the advertising section of any newspaper. The column should be about half a meter long, or longer if you find one.

B. Place the strip on the table and apply a thin layer of rubber cement along the center section on one side. Let the glue dry. Sprinkle the surface of the glue with talcum powder. Spread the talc evenly over the surface of the glue with a cloth or soft brush. (The talcum powder will prevent the surfaces from sticking together when you fold the strip in half.) Once you've completed this procedure, you're ready to present.

1. Start by showing a newspaper ad column, commenting on the different things being advertised in the newspaper. At this point in the procedure, it is appropriate to introduce an element of comedy by reading funny, awkward advertisements or pretending to read. It is advisable that these are genuine advertising texts, the most ridiculous and absurd that you can find. For example, “For sale: a citizen named Murphy, a used tombstone in excellent condition!”

2. After “reading” the first ad from the middle of the column, fold a strip of newsprint in half, with the prepared surface facing inward.

3. Using sharp scissors, cut off the fold formed in the middle of the strip: be sure to strictly across the strip. Let them know that you are cutting out the ad you just “read.” You should cut a piece with a total length of no more than a centimeter. Before you cut a piece of strip, make sure that the glued surfaces are touching each other. With scissors you act openly, and the audience should have no doubt that the newspaper strip is cut into two, and it really is cut in two.

4. Now carefully unfold the strip, showing that it has been restored into a single whole! Rubber cement will help the two strips connect at the cut end, creating the illusion that the advertising column has been restored. Even from a close distance, no one will notice the nature of this “reunion”.

5. Act out the scene of reading the next, no less ridiculous ad, fold the strip of paper again and cut out another piece in the center. This time cut a piece of paper not straight across, but at an angle to the right, as shown in the picture.

Focus Cut and Recovered Paper

6. When you unroll the strip, the rubber cement will reconnect the two pieces, but the top piece will be at an acute angle to the right with respect to the bottom piece.

Focus Cut and Recovered Paper

7. Cut the folded strip again. This time - at an angle to the left.

8. When you unfold the strip, the top part will be at an acute angle to the left.

Focus Cut and Recovered Paper

9. Finally, fold the strip again and cut part of the strip one last time - straight across, just like the first time in step 3.

Focus Cut and Recovered Paper

10. When you unfold the newspaper column, it will again be straight, as it was at the beginning.

Focus Cut and Recovered Paper

11. To complete the trick, crease or fold the strip of newspaper.

You can play along with the audience by feigning embarrassment every time you cut off a piece of newspaper. Each time you “make a mistake” and try to solve the problem by cutting off another piece of paper. The audience always laughs with pleasure when the magician makes a mistake.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Chip that combines USB Type-C and PD 2.0 17.01.2015

Etron Technology has introduced a product that complies with the USB 3.1 specification. We are talking about the EJ988 chip, which combines the functions of a USB Type-C key and a Power Delivery 2.0 controller. According to the manufacturer, for the first time in the world.

The EJ988 supports balanced bidirectional USB Type-C connectors and cables, and is rated for data transfer rates up to 10Gbps and power transfer up to 100W (20V, 5A). The presence of a built-in key provides the possibility of two-way switching, that is, a device with EJ988 can act as both a load and a power source.

The enhanced integration of the EJ988 has reduced the size of the solution, reducing the number of external components and PCB area. This is especially true in the case of laptops, mobile and wearable devices, for which the EJ988 is positioned.
