Sometimes for the trick you will need to force the viewer (let it be Maria) to select one or more cards (we will use the term "force a card" in what follows) so that she gets the impression that she has chosen them at random herself.

One way to do this is called "cross forcing", but it must be done quickly and confidently, distracting the viewer with a reprise. If someone has time to analyze what you are doing, they will realize that the "randomly" chosen card is actually the top card of the deck.

1. First, take a quick look (see above) at the bottom card of the deck, casually aligning it. Maria should not see the card, since it is her that she will have to "freely" choose! Let's say the bottom card of the deck is the jack of diamonds.

2. "Shuffle" the cards using a false shuffle 1-3 times so that the jack of diamonds is on top of the deck (see above in the text).

Now put the deck on the table and ask Mary to remove the deck, taking half of the cards from above, and put them on the table. Take the bottom half of the cards and lay it crosswise on top.

3. Now you need to mislead the viewer. You might say, "Here, you could take the deck down any way you wanted, right?" Maria agrees. "And I shuffled it well before that, didn't I?" Maria again agrees. "So there's no way I can recognize your card?" While saying this, raise the half of the deck that lies across the other half, point to the top card of the remaining half and say: "Then look at it and, without showing it to me, demonstrate to the others."

4. Now say to Mary: "Memorize the card, put it back into the deck and (holding out the rest of the deck to Mary) shuffle all the cards together so that it is lost in the deck." This is how it looks, but you know that Maria chose the jack of diamonds.

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Implanted brain stimulator 30.04.2024

In recent years, scientific research in the field of neurotechnology has made enormous progress, opening new horizons for the treatment of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. One of the significant achievements was the creation of the smallest implanted brain stimulator, presented by a laboratory at Rice University. Called Digitally Programmable Over-brain Therapeutic (DOT), this innovative device promises to revolutionize treatments by providing more autonomy and accessibility to patients. The implant, developed in collaboration with Motif Neurotech and clinicians, introduces an innovative approach to brain stimulation. It is powered through an external transmitter using magnetoelectric power transfer, eliminating the need for wires and large batteries typical of existing technologies. This makes the procedure less invasive and provides more opportunities to improve patients' quality of life. In addition to its use in treatment, resist ... >>

The perception of time depends on what one is looking at 29.04.2024

Research in the field of the psychology of time continues to surprise us with its results. Recent discoveries by scientists from George Mason University (USA) turned out to be quite remarkable: they discovered that what we look at can greatly influence our sense of time. During the experiment, 52 participants took a series of tests, estimating the duration of viewing various images. The results were surprising: the size and detail of the images had a significant impact on the perception of time. Larger, less cluttered scenes created the illusion of time slowing down, while smaller, busier images gave the feeling of time speeding up. Researchers suggest that visual clutter or detail overload can make it difficult to perceive the world around us, which in turn can lead to faster perception of time. Thus, it was shown that our perception of time is closely related to what we look at. Larger and smaller ... >>

New power supplies for LED applications 24.07.2007

Mean Well has introduced a new series of 60W enclosed AC/DC power supplies ELN-60. Designed for LED applications, ELN-60, unlike the PLN-60 series, does not have a power factor corrector, which has reduced the price of the product.

The fixtures meet the requirements of UL 1310 class 2, which means that in any situation the output will be less than 100 VA or 5 A. This will greatly reduce the hazard to those who install or maintain LED systems.

The IP64 waterproof and dustproof plastic housing protects the electronic parts of these power supplies from dust and moisture, which makes them suitable for use in various adverse conditions: for outdoor installation or in rooms with a high content of dust or moisture in the air. The efficiency of power supplies of the ELN-60 series reaches 88%, the devices can operate in a wide temperature range of -20...60°C, they do not require external airflow.

Standard features include a set of protections against short circuit, overload, overvoltage and overheating. The modules have overload protection of the "DC limit" type. Implemented the ability to adjust the level of protection operation (option). Mean Well ELN-60 power supplies are designed to power running lines and illuminate elements of decorative, architectural, theater and stage lighting, LED electronic displays.
