Focus Description:

The spectator shuffles the cards, chooses one card from the deck, spread out like a fan, and shifts it to the middle of the deck. The deck is shuffled and divided into two parts. The spectator chooses any half, the magician takes the other. The magician and the spectator together place four cards from their decks face down on the table. The spectator selects one card at a time, leaving one card out of eight on the table. It turns out to be the card chosen by the spectator.

Focus secret:

This is a great example of the use of the so-called "magician's choice".

1. Give a volunteer, let's call him Sergey, a deck to shuffle. Take the cards from him, unfold them like a fan and ask him to choose a card, look at it and remember it. Let it be a ten of spades. While he is doing this, line up the cards in your left and right hands and ask him to place a card on the pile in your left hand.

2. Pass the two halves of the deck and proceed to Fake Shuffle 1 to keep the Ten of Spades on top of the deck. Put the deck on the table and ask Sergey to divide it into two parts.

Ask him to take any half, and take the other yourself. It doesn't matter which part Sergey chooses, but you have to remember which of you ended up with a pile on top of which is a ten of spades. Suppose Sergey took this half.

3. Say, "Now we're going to find the card you've chosen. First, we'll both place four cards in a row on the table in front of us, face down." Do it. Ask for the cards Sergey still has in his hand, add them to yours, and discard them all face down to the side.

4. Each of you now has a row of four cards in front of you. The first card in Sergey's row is the ten of spades. Tell him: "Will you point to one of these rows, Sergey?"

If he points to yours, say "Fine, we only need one row" and, after collecting it, add it to the discarded cards. If he points to his, say "OK", collect your four cards and add them to the discarded cards. This is the magician's choice.

5. Now ask Sergey to choose two cards on the table by placing his fingers on them. Whatever pair he chooses, ask if he is sure and if he wants to change his mind. Regardless of his answer, he will eventually point to two cards. If he pointed to the ten of spades, take the remaining two cards and say: "Great. We live in a free world, it was your choice." Add the two remaining cards to the discarded ones.

6. If Sergey has his fingers on two cards, tell him: "We have two cards left. All you have to do is remove your finger from one of them, and we will be left with the final card, with which we will find your chosen card that may be in the discard pile." Of course, if Sergey removes his finger from the ten of spades, draw another card.

7. If Sergey puts his fingers on two cards, among which there are no ten of spades, you must take these two cards from under his fingers and say: “Good. We must discard these cards and leave the other two.

We only need one card to help us find your chosen card, which may be hiding in that pile of discarded cards, so you should, maybe for the last time, put your finger on the card. "If he puts his finger on the ten of spades, take and discard another. If it is placed on another, take it, saying: "This is the last card we must discard."

8. Now you can say: “OK. We now have a card on the table that you chose yourself, and I think this card will serve as a clue to discover the card that you chose from the deck at the very beginning. So, what was this card ?" While saying this, take the deck of discarded cards, as if you want to find Sergey's card in it.

Sergey says that he chose the ten of spades. Say, "Which card did you choose to find it? Please turn it over." The card turns out to be the ten of spades.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Silent flight of owls solved 04.02.2024

Scientists from CHIBA University in Japan have uncovered the secret of owls' silent flight. Researchers long fascinated by this unique ability of owls have discovered that the microfibre, a special feature of the trailing edge of owls' wings, plays a key role in suppressing noise while maintaining optimal aerodynamic performance.

The discovery of the influence of microbeams on the noise levels of owls in flight provides valuable knowledge that can be applied to technology to create quieter and more efficient aerodynamic systems. The prospects for the use of these principles in a variety of fields, including aviation and engineering, foreshadow steady progress in the fields of noise reduction and bioinspired innovation.

The team of scientists built two three-dimensional models of wings: one with a microfibre, and the other without it. Using a combination of vortex modeling techniques and Fox-Williams-Gocking computational acoustics, they simulated fluid flow to accurately reproduce flight conditions. The main attention was paid to the flight gliding speed of real owls.

The results of the study showed that microfibre effectively reduces the noise level of the wing, especially at high angles of attack, without harming aerodynamics compared to wings without this feature. Scientists have identified two complementary mechanisms by which microbiome affects air flow.

First, the micro-fender breaks up vortices at the trailing edge of the wing, reducing airflow fluctuations. Secondly, it reduces the interaction between feathers at the wing edge, preventing the formation of vortices. The combination of these mechanisms improves aerodynamic properties and reduces noise levels.

This discovery has broad prospects beyond ornithology. The study suggests similar strips could be used to reduce noise in a variety of man-made structures, including drones, windmills, propellers and even flying cars.

Experts believe that a thorough understanding of these mechanisms opens the way to the development of methods for reducing noise in equipment operating in liquid media.
