Focus Description:

The magician writes a prediction on a piece of paper, which he puts aside. After the spectator shuffles the deck, he is asked to deal two cards, turning them face up. If both cards are black, he must place them in the pile on the right. If both cards are red, they are placed to the left. If they are of both colors, that is, one red and one black, they are placed in the discard pile. This continues until the entire deck has been dealt.

The magician focuses the viewer's attention on the fact that only pure chance determines the number of cards in the red and black piles.

After the cards are dealt, the red and black piles are counted. Reading a prediction. It reads: "There will be four more red cards." And it is.

The cards are collected, shuffled and the trick is repeated. The prediction this time says: "There will be two more black cards." And this is confirmed again.

On the third and final repetition, the black and red piles have the same number of cards. The prediction says: "The two piles will be equal."

Focus secret:

Before starting the demonstration, the magician secretly removes four black cards from the deck. If he is sitting at the table, the cards can be clamped between his knees.

After the first two cards are dealt, there will undoubtedly be four more cards in the red pile than in the red pile. The explanation for this is that the discarded pairs are half red and half black, so that the same number of reds and blacks are removed from the deck. Since the deck is four black cards smaller than usual, the red pile will undoubtedly have four more cards than the black pile.

When attention is focused on counting both piles, the magician naturally takes the pile of discarded cards, where red and black are mixed, and places them on his knees. Then he secretly returns the four black cards, which are sandwiched between his knees, and takes two red ones. When after that all the cards are collected from the table and shuffled, the deck will be two red cards smaller than usual and ready for the second prediction.

A similar procedure is used to prepare the deck for the third and final divination. This time, two red cards are returned to the deck and none are taken. Now the deck contains all 52 cards, why the red and black piles will be equal, and if anyone wants to count all the cards after the trick is completed, he will find a full deck.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Juggler - intellectual specialty 02.12.2004

Until now, scientists believed that the adult brain does not grow, and from a certain age even decreases due to aging.

Researchers from the Universities of Regensburg and Jena (Germany) proved that this is not the case. The experimenters divided a group of 24 young men and women with a mean age of 22 into two equal subgroups. Members of one of them were taught to juggle for three months, the other did nothing.

With the help of magnetic resonance imaging, the brain sizes of the subjects were compared before and after learning to juggle. It turned out that the trainees clearly increased the layer of gray matter (that is, neurons) in the left posterior sulcus in the cerebral cortex, located between the upper and lower lateral lobes of the brain. It is believed that this area perceives the movements of objects in three-dimensional space.

In the control subgroup, which was not trained in juggling, such an increase in gray matter was not found. True, after the jugglers stopped training, the additional neurons they acquired disappeared again.
