Yagel, Cladonia rangiferina. Interesting plant facts

Reindeer moss

In places, the tundra is completely covered with lichens - greenish-yellowish, like an unripe apple, or gray, like ash. These little plants, half a pencil tall, in their shape, they don’t know what they look like. Sometimes they look like corals. But more often, looking at them, you remember the chimera plants with which science fiction writers inhabit other planets. "Bushes" of lichen, clinging to one another, form a dense, resiliently soft carpet. Here and there it swells with springy bumps.

Bushy lichens in the tundra are called "moss moss" or "reindeer moss". They are the main food of the reindeer, and therefore the basis of the very life of people in the tundra. Lichen for a person here is the same as bread, and perhaps even more important than bread for an inhabitant of a forest or steppe zone.

However, lichens live not only in the tundra. They find a comfortable home in the damp thickets of tropical forests, and on the frozen rocks of the highlands, and on the hot stones of the hottest deserts...

Lichen is still a mystery plant today. People penetrated its main secret only a little over a hundred years ago. This was one of the most amazing discoveries of that time. Scientists learned to their amazement: lichen is not one plant, but two! Two, and very different plants, but inseparably, united for life into one organism.

...Let's cut out a thin, pre-thin plate from a lichen. Let's look at this plate through a microscope. We will see an interweaving of white, almost colorless tubes. This is a mushroom: every mushroom body consists of such tubules. And behind the lattice of tubes we can see funny emerald green balls. Those are tiny algae. Similar to them live in freedom on their own.

Emerald balls are collected closer to the surface of the lichen - closer to the light. After all, algae is green because it is endowed with chlorophyll. She catches the sun's rays and prepares food for the fungus from carbon dioxide. The fungus delivers water and the necessary solutions of chemical elements to it. And the fungus also protects the delicate algae from drying out too quickly during a long lack of rain!

So they live together as one. But, having combined, having added their skills and capabilities, they have become a completely different plant. Neither in appearance nor in needs does a lichen look at all like an algae or a fungus.

The name itself - "algae" suggests that she loves moisture. Algae settles where it is damper.

The fungus needs ready-made food, and it settles where there is a lot of rotting plant debris, or right on living plants.

Lichen is hardy like no other plant, and is able to exist anywhere, even in the most extreme conditions of heat and cold, humidity and drought!

Yagel, Cladonia rangiferina. Tips for growing, harvesting and storing

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Reindeer Moss (Cladonia rangiferina) is a lichen that grows in cold climates in the Northern Hemisphere. It is of great importance to rangers and reindeer herders in the northern regions, as reindeer moss is an important food source for deer and other animals.

Yagel grows in cold climates, so growing it at home is not practically possible. Yagel grows in the wild mainly in the north and in mountainous areas.

Tips for harvesting and storing reindeer moss:

Workpiece:

  • Yagel can be harvested at any time of the year, but it is best to harvest it in spring or summer when it is in active growth.
  • It is recommended to collect reindeer moss in places where it grows abundantly, and not to take large pieces so as not to damage the plant.
  • Reindeer moss can be dried in the air or in an oven at a low temperature.
  • Yagel can be used to make tea, tinctures, decoctions and other medicines.

Storage:

  • Dry reindeer moss can be stored in a container or bag in a cool and dry place.
  • Yagel can also be stored frozen to preserve its freshness and nutritional properties.

It should be taken into account that reindeer moss is an important element of the ecosystem in the northern regions, therefore it is recommended to take special care when collecting and using this plant.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Window to the brain 16.07.2016

In May of this year, scientists at the University of California at San Diego reported a successful experiment implanting a viewing window into the head of a Drosophila fly. To do this, a hole the size of several grains of salt was cut out in the exoskeleton covering the head of the fly, filled with transparent silicone glue, and a cover slip was placed on top - a strip of thin transparent material used in microscopy. This was done in order to observe the work of the brain using a complex system of cameras and mirrors.

However, Drosophila was only the first step. Scientists from different countries have been working for three years to "cut through" a window into the brain, and the studies have confirmed the viability, if not of the patient, then, in any case, of the method. For such a procedure, in 2013, a transparent implant was developed from yttrium-stabilized zirconium, a material used for dental crowns and hip prosthetics, that is, suitable for humans.

The first study by scientists at the University of California showed that such a window in the skull would allow the use of a laser for brain surgery associated with tumors and brain injuries. In addition, the laser can also be used to fight bacteria at the implant site. During the study, the scientists were able to kill the E. coli bacteria on the "window" in this way, and, in their opinion, this procedure will work on a living brain without causing damage to the tissue under the window.

The second study, conducted by Mexican scientists, was devoted to the implantation of a "window" in the head of a hamster. Zirconium stabilized with yttrium has been found to cause no more tissue damage than existing implant materials and does not cause unusual inflammation or other immune system responses. Moreover, the material has shown greater biocompatibility than currently used titanium and thermoplastic polymers. Further research will be devoted to increasing the strength of the material without harming living tissues.
