The first full-featured chip based on 16FinFET technology 30.09.2014

Taiwanese giant TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) together with HiSilicon Technologies announced the production of full-featured ARM processors for network equipment, made using 16FinFET technology (16 nanometers, transistors with a three-dimensional structure). It is claimed that these are the first products of this kind in the industry.

According to TSMC, the implementation of the 16FinFET technique allows for doubling the cell density compared to chips obtained using 28nm 28HPM technology. Performance increases by 40% while maintaining the same power consumption. In the case of achieving maximum efficiency, power consumption can be reduced by 60% at the same level of performance.

Chips based on 16FinFET technology are designed for use in next-generation wireless network equipment. The processors contain 32 ARM Cortex-A57 cores with support for 64-bit instructions and a maximum operating frequency of 2,6 GHz.

By the end of 2014, TSMC plans to introduce a 16nm FinFET+ process that will further improve chip power consumption.

It is reported that large-scale production of 16-nanometer products at TSMC enterprises will start in the first quarter of 2015.
