Focus Description:

The magician draws the audience's attention to a stack of heavy cardboard shields. He shows each shield separately and begins to fit one shield to another in turn. Soon the audience begins to realize that the illusionist is putting together a tent. He completes the construction by putting the roof on four solid walls without openings. Almost immediately, the illusionist raises the roof, under which a beautiful girl magically appeared in the house!

Focus secret:

(A) If you want to use cardboard as your starting material, it must be strong and rigid.

(C) In addition, for this setting you will need strong adhesive tape to act as a hinge and connect the various parts of the tent, and, if desired, paints and brushes to finish the finished tent.

(C) Having collected all the materials, cut out two identical elements from the cardboard, as shown in the figure. If your cardboard does not exactly match the indicated dimensions, do not worry. These elements should be large enough for your assistant to hide behind:

(To convert to centimeters, multiply all dimensions by 2,54 cm.)

(D) Fold the two pieces along the dotted line.

(E) If the cardboard is too stiff and does not fold, you can cut the element into two parts:

(F) Then fasten again with wide duct tape to act as a hinge. Once crafted, these two elements will become the four walls of your tent:

(G) Then cut out another element. This is the roof of the tent. It can also be folded along the dotted line. If necessary, cut along the dotted line and then reattach with duct tape:

(H) Note. Note that the two roof slopes are the same dimensions and are approximately 2 inches (5 cm) longer than the tent walls (X and Y) that the roof will rest on when assembled.

(I) Do a test assembly to make sure all items match. Then paint the awning according to the style you chose for the show: circus tent, haunted house, dollhouse, and so on:

(J) Note. Cardboard of this type is painted very well, so it is best to use just such a material. Small distortions due to warping, if any, you can correct by bending the plane in the other direction. However, by painting both sides, you will minimize the possibility of warping. To decorate the tent, you can also use colored self-adhesive paper.

(K) When you have finished preparing the props, place the roof on edge, folding it into a two-piece screen. Fold the other two elements completely and place them side by side, leaning against the left side of the roof, as shown in the figure. The girl must stand behind the roof:

Note: the position of the magician is indicated by a hat, the position of the girl is indicated by the letter "G".

1. The curtain opens and you announce to the public that you intend to build a magic tent. Take the first folded element (one of the walls of the tent), open it and show the audience from all sides:

2. You must leave one part "half open". As you will see later, there is an important reason for this. Note that the long part of wall 2 is directed exactly towards the hall.

3. Immediately take the second folded wall and show it to the audience. Turn around and put up a wall:

4. It is at this moment that the assistant secretly moves from behind the roof into the tent. You mask this movement by your actions: you fit one wall to another.

5. Now quickly go around the tent on the left, while openly closing the gap between the walls, as if correcting it. Go to the right of the tent, take the roof and show it to the audience from all sides:

6. Then put the roof on the walls. Be careful: do not move or overturn the wall so that the audience does not see the girl ahead of time:

7. After making a magical gesture towards the tent, suddenly raise the roof. The assistant at this moment abruptly stands up. She magically appeared out of nowhere!

8. To applause, you open the front wall and the girl takes a step forward.
