Focus Description:

After another trick, the artist had a desire to know what time it was. He takes out his pocket watch on a chain and puts it to his ear. Judging by the expression on the performer's face, the course of the clock does not satisfy him. He takes the watch off the chain and puts it on his hand. Then the performer makes several movements with his hand and the clock disappears. The artist shows the audience empty hands.

With the thumb and forefinger of his left hand, he takes the end of the chain where the clock hung, and with his right hand he makes a movement in the air, as if catching something. Then, with the right hand, the magician makes a message towards the left, holding the chain. The fingers of the left hand let go of the chain - the same watch hangs on it again.

After looking at them, the artist puts the watch in the top pocket of his jacket, where they were earlier.

Focus secret:

For the focus, you must have two exactly the same clock. Of course, they are not real, but to make the watch look real, you need to purchase two cases with a dial. So that the dial does not slip inside the empty case, it should be filled with cotton wool. You need to insert glass into the clock, and draw arrows on the dials showing the same time on both clocks.

To this watch you will need an ordinary metal chain for a pocket watch. At both ends of the chain, you need to put on a ring, on which keys are usually strung. Rings should not be larger than a ten-kopeck coin in diameter. A prepared watch should be put on each ring (Fig. 1).

The performer places one watch on a chain in the top pocket of his jacket, while others, of course, must be disguised. To do this, the artist needs to make an appropriate secret device. At the level of the pocket behind the side of the jacket in the depths, not near the very bend, you need to sew a hook for the dress. Above the hook at a distance of 6-8 cm, an ordinary metal ring is sewn a little to the right (Fig. 2).

Now, with the help of this device, you can disguise the second watch. The performer removes the watch with the ring from the chain together, passes the chain through the ring sewn to the jacket and puts the ring with the watch on it again. After that, he hangs the watch on a hook by the hour ring, which is available for all pocket watches (Fig. 3).

Starting the demonstration, the performer, of course, pulls out the watch that is in his pocket. Unfastening them from the chain, he makes the necessary movements and discreetly hides the watch in his pocket. At the time when the artist takes the free end of the chain with the fingers of his left hand (forefinger and thumb), he distracts the attention of the audience with his right hand, making movements in the air with it. At the same time, his left hand pulls the chain, which lifts up, invisible to the audience, the second, secret clock (Fig. 4).

This watch can be easily removed from the hook. Now it remains for the performer to release the chain, opening the fingers of his left hand, the clock will slip out of the cache, hanging on the chain. The chain will be held by a ring sewn to the jacket. This is the main detail of the secret device (Fig. 5).

The performer needs to remember that when he takes off the first watch, the ring holding it must remain at the end of the chain, otherwise in the final, when the second watch appears, the chain will slip through the ring sewn to the jacket and the watch will fall to the floor. This trick is not difficult, but it requires careful preparation and rehearsal.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Electricity from mushrooms and wooden floor 01.04.2021

Wood consists of fibers of cellulose and hemicellulose polymers in a lignin matrix. Cellulose in the composition of wood can be amorphous and crystalline. The presence of the latter makes wood a piezoelectric material - a material in which electric charges arise under the action of deformation. When cellulose crystallites are compressed, the centers of gravity of positive and negative charges diverge in space, and charges arise on the surface of the crystallite to maintain electrostatic equilibrium. The piezoelectric properties of wood have been known since the fifties, but no one has made commercial materials and devices for generating electricity from it - due to the low piezoelectric modulus and the deformability of wood, this was considered unprofitable.

Swiss scientists led by Ingo Burgert from ETH Zurich managed to enhance the piezoelectric properties of wood. Burgert and his colleagues have long been able to change the properties of wood and obtain various functional materials on its basis. For example, last year they turned balsa wood into a luminous material by dissolving lignin and replacing it with a solution of luminescent quantum dots. To make wood a good piezoelectric, you also need to dissolve the lignin, then the wood will become looser, and it will be easier to deform it. In order to carry out the dissolution gently, without damaging the cellulose framework, Burgert and his colleagues proposed an unexpected solution - they treated the wood with mushrooms from the basidiomycete department.

The scientists again took the light wood of the balsa tree (Ochroma pyramidale) with a density of 94,8 kilograms per cubic meter as the basis for the material. Three types of fungi were used to dissolve lignin: Phanerochaete chrysosporium, Ganoderma adspersum, and Ganoderma applanatum. The wood was cut into thin plates, dried at a temperature of 100 degrees during the day, a freshly prepared mushroom culture was applied to the surface and left in a humid atmosphere for a period of 4 to 12 weeks.

To control how much lignin the fungi had time to absorb, wood samples were thoroughly cleaned and dried again for a day, and then weighed. The fastest loss of lignin was provided by the fungi Ganoderma applanatum. The optimal processing time Burgert and his colleagues considered eight weeks (corresponding to a weight loss of 45 percent mainly due to lignin) - with longer processing, the wood became too loose and significantly lost strength. Fourier IR spectroscopy confirmed that the fungi preferentially absorbed lignin, and a slight loss of hemicellulose was also observed. But the cellulose frame of wood remained practically unchanged after treatment - this was clearly visible not only in the IR spectra, but also in the images of scanning electron microscopy.

Lignin-free wood had better compressibility. As a result, the displacement of the centers of gravity of the charge in cellulose crystallites occurred with a greater amplitude, and the piezoelectric effect also increased. A cube of treated wood measuring 15 x 15 x 13,2 millimeters generated a voltage of 0,87 volts and a current of 13,3 nanoamps. This is fifty-five times more than unmodified wood under the same conditions. By connecting nine such cubes in series, the authors obtained electricity sufficient to power a light emitting diode.

From the new material, the authors propose to make a floor covering that will produce electricity under the weight of human steps. Such a coating could be placed in the homes of the elderly and powered by sensors that are activated if a person falls. There are more exotic ideas for using piezoelectric wood floors in dance and aerobics rooms. Note that so far Burgert and his colleagues have obtained a piezoelectric material only from balsa wood - light and with a large number of pores. In the future, they are going to adapt the method for denser and heavier types of wood.
