Invisible Air prevents falling? Well, there are times when this comes in handy. For example, a pilot jumped out of a burning plane. It would be nice for him to fall more slowly! Then he would not have crashed to the ground, he would have remained alive and healthy.

But air effectively delays the fall of only those bodies that have low weight and a large surface area. And the pilot has a decent weight. This means that he needs a very large surface. And such a surface has already been prepared. It is neatly folded in a satchel behind his back.

The pilot fumbles for the ring... A jerk... Boo-boom! With a resounding crash, a huge silk dome unfolds. It fills with air, it swells, flutters like a sail in a storm. And the fall immediately slows down. Yes, so sharply that the pilot is thoroughly shaken. Now he will descend from a height of several kilometers as if he had just jumped from a cabinet.

A wonderful device that saves a pilot is called a parachute. The word is French and means "to prevent falling." The modern parachute, improved by the Soviet inventor Kotelnikov, is so reliable that it is used not only to save lives in accidents, but also for sports. There are skydivers who have completed more than a thousand jumps!

In the army, entire military units jump with parachutes. Literally, winged infantry appears from the sky behind enemy lines. What infantry! Cars, guns, even tanks descend from the sky on special cargo parachutes!

You can also make a small model of a parachute. Take a square sheet of thick paper measuring 168x168 mm. The size is not random: 168 mm is the width of a sheet from a school notebook. Fold back the corners, and bend the very corners again. Pierce the folds of the corners with a needle and pass it through a thread tied at the end with a thick knot so that it does not pull out. Carefully align the free ends of all threads and tie them with a common knot.

What saves pilots?

Now the toy parachute is ready. Attach a load to the common unit: some kind of screw or two or three hair clips. After several tests, you will select a load with which the parachute will fall not too quickly, but at the same time not too slowly, without “yawing” or turning over. Instead of a weight, you can hang a celluloid doll of a suitable size. This will be a pilot saved by invisible air.
