The Sony PlayStation video console is, first of all, a wonderful toy for the younger generation. However, by connecting an additional MOVIE CARD unit or, otherwise, a video CD module (VCDM) to its "PARALLEL I/O" connector. You can also watch movies recorded on laser discs in VCD 1.0 formats. VCD 1.1, VCD2.0 (MPEG-1). The image is much better (no slowdown and on a larger screen) than when viewed using an IBM-compatible computer equipped with a software MPEG decoder. A convenient on-screen menu, the items of which are selected using the game joystick, allows you to slow down, speed up or stop playback, “rewind” the film in both directions, and set a timer. The quality of digital video recording on laser discs, unlike analog video recording on video cassettes, does not deteriorate over time; discs are more compact than cassettes and are less subject to physical wear and tear. One video disc can contain no more than 74 minutes of “live” video, so full-length films are usually recorded on two, 45 minutes each.

The VCDM module is not included in the PlayStation package; it must be purchased separately. The block diagram of VCDM is shown in Fig. 1.

The module's sockets, intended for connection to a video set-top box, are located in such a way that they connect directly without cables to the CN502 "AV MULTI OUT" and CN103 "PARALLEL I/O" plugs. Manufacturers carefully observe the dimensions, so there are no problems with connection. The TV is disconnected from the video set-top box and connected to the nine-pin “AV MULTI OUT” socket of the module or to its “AUDIO OUT FT”, “AUDIO OUT L”, “VIDEO OUT” sockets.

The VCDM intelligence is concentrated in the video card connected to the control panel and backplane. There is a mode switch on the control panel.

When its contacts are closed ("VCD" position). watch videos, and when open ("GAME" position), work with regular game discs. The LED built into the switch key lights up constantly after turning on the video disc viewing mode, and while reading information from the video disc it blinks at a frequency of 1 Hz. In game mode the LED is off.

The supply voltage is supplied to the VCDM through the backplane. It also serves to switch video and audio signals supplied to the TV. Since this board is completely repairable even at home, we will begin our consideration of VCDM circuitry with it.

The cross-board scheme is shown in fig. 2.

Conventionally, three channels can be distinguished: video (Q1, U1), audio (U3). power supply (U2). In the video channel of the backplane, a full color television signal with an amplitude of about 1.5 V from the "PlayStation" through an omitter follower on transistor 01 8050 (analogue - KT3102B) is supplied to the switch - the U1 NS4066 microcircuit. consisting of four bidirectional CMOS switches controlled by logic levels at inputs 5. 6. 12. 13 To reduce the transition resistance, the switch switches are connected in pairs in parallel. A complete analogue of the NS4066 microcircuit - K561KTZ.

The switch is controlled using signals "1/0" and "0/1". coming from the video card through the CN2 plug. With a logical 1 on pins 5 and 6 of the U1 microcircuit, a signal generated by the "PlayStation" is supplied to the output, with a logical 1 on pins 12 and 13 - by the video card of the module. Through a filter (elements L1. C12-C14), the switch output is connected to connectors J1 and CN1. designed to connect the video input of a TV. Diodes D1 and D2 are protective, resistor R14 is matching.

In the audio channel, the stereo audio signals produced by the PlayStation and the video card are summed. The first come through resistors R8 and R11. the second - through R7 and R10. Elements of the quad operational amplifier LM324P (analogue of KR1435UD2) U3.1 and U3.3 amplify the signals of the left and right stereo channels by voltage, and U3.2 and U3.4 are buffer ones. Capacitors C29 and C30. by suppressing harmonics of the quantization frequency of audio signals, they reduce “metallic” overtones. Resistive divider R5R6 provides a constant 2.5 V bias on the non-inverting inputs of op-amp U3.1 and U3.2. necessary for the normal operation of the latter. Capacitors C25 and C27 are blocking.

In the power channel, +7.6 V is obtained from the voltage +5 V coming from the "PlayStation". For this purpose, the integrated stabilizer U2 KIA7805P (analogous to KR142EN5A) is used. A large number of capacitors and chokes are installed in the power circuits, suppressing interference and parasitic connections between video and audio channels. The current consumed by the VCDM reaches 0.3...0.4 A. Therefore, the U2 stabilizer is equipped with a heat sink with an area of 40 cm2. The names of the circuits of plug CN3 correspond to those given in [1], sockets CN1, CN2 - to the markings on the printed circuit board. The view of the CN1 socket from the socket side is shown in Fig. 3. A similar one is installed in the Sega Mega Drive-2 video console. with a similar arrangement and purpose of contacts 4, 5, 7-10.

The CN2 socket is unique in design and is used only in PlayStation. The location of its nests is shown in Fig. 4.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>
