At present, equipment made according to a double frequency conversion scheme with a fixed first IF is gaining more and more popularity among shortwaves. Such a construction of a transceiver or receiver has a number of advantages. However, in this case, there are some difficulties in creating a highly stable smooth range generator (the first local oscillator). Good results here can be obtained using a premixed local oscillator, but such a local oscillator is rather complicated. In addition, it requires the use of scarce quartz resonators (up to 5 - 7 resonators to completely cover all amateur KB bands).

Local oscillator for KB transceiver

Achieving good stability in a simpler oscillator-switched LO is difficult due to the need to vary the oscillator output frequency over a wide range (with the most common 9 MHz first IF being 5,5 to 21 MHz!).

However, these limits are significantly narrowed if frequency multiplication is applied to the local oscillator. In this case, it is possible, by optimizing the operation of a smooth generator, to achieve its high stability, close to the stability of an unswitched generator for the same frequency range. The functional diagram of such a local oscillator is shown in the figure. It consists of a smoothly switched oscillator G1, a buffer amplifier U1, a multiplier U2 and band pass filters U3.

For the first intermediate frequency of 9 MHz, the frequency of the generator G1 must lie within 5 ... 6,9 MHz. The values of the operating frequencies of the smooth generator and the numbers of harmonics allocated in the frequency multiplier for various amateur bands are given in the table.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Serotonin does not affect the development of depression 01.08.2022

Low levels of serotonin, also called the “feel good hormone,” are thought to cause depression. However, British scientists consider this approach too simplistic. And question the use of antidepressants.

"Thousands of people are suffering from the side effects of antidepressants. But the number of prescriptions continues to grow," said study leader Joanna Moncrieff, professor of psychiatry at University College London.

Scientists analyzed data from tens of thousands of patients, including both healthy and depressed patients. Experts compared the levels of serotonin and its breakdown products in the blood and brain fluids. It turned out that there was no difference in their levels between healthy and sick people.

Research on the serotonin receptor and transporter has been very controversial. High levels of serotonin were observed in patients with depression. Experts attribute this to the fact that they are taking antidepressants that cause such an effect.

As it turned out, changing the diet, when the amino acid necessary for the production of serotonin was excluded from the diet, also did not cause depression. This has been shown in studies of hundreds of healthy volunteers. Small evidence of this was observed only in 75 patients with a genetic predisposition to a mental disorder.

In addition, the researchers looked at the relationship between stressful events and depression. If earlier it was believed that stress causes a decrease in serotonin and, accordingly, caused depression, now experts doubt this. And they believe that a decrease in the activity of the “hormone of happiness” has nothing to do with depression.
