Casein glue may well replace ordinary carpentry; it is less susceptible to moisture, almost colorless, glues wood, paper, glass, etc. very firmly, and most importantly, every radio amateur can prepare casein glue. The only disadvantage of casein glue is that it "sets" relatively slowly, and therefore the items to be glued must dry for about 10-12 hours.
The material for the manufacture of casein glue is cottage cheese made from skimmed milk. This cottage cheese must be washed 2-3 times in cold water, and then, putting it in a rag or canvas bag, squeeze it well. Squeezed cottage cheese is placed in a pot or tin, lime water (a settled solution of lime) and ammonia are poured there in the following proportion: 1 cm100 of lime water and 3-70 cm80 of 3 percent. ammonia (in extreme cases, you can do without lime water). The mixture is heated in hot steam or in boiling water to a temperature of 25-35 ° and is thoroughly mixed with a wooden stick all the time; after 40-20 minutes the glue will be ready, after which it is diluted to the desired density. Store glue in a cool place.
If there is dry casein (acidic), then glue can also be prepared from it in a similar way, i.e., first rinse the casein 2-3 times with water, then put it in a jar or tin, pour an equal amount of water by weight and leave it for 12- 16 hours.
After the casein gets wet and swells, lime water and ammonia are added to the vessel in the proportion: for 1 kg of casein 150 cm3 of lime water and 50-60 cm3 of ammonia. Casein uncooking lasts about one hour in a boiling water bath, and the glue must be stirred all the time with a wooden stick.
