For an ultrashortwave it is very important to be able to accurately determine the distance between correspondents. Usually this is done like this: the correspondent's location on the map is determined by the QTH locator, and then the distance is measured with a ruler. At the same time, as experience shows, significant errors are made: firstly, due to the fact that there is still no single map of QTH locators, secondly, errors in measurements are possible, and thirdly, due to the fact that they are produced in a straight line, and not in an arc of a circle of the radius of the Earth.

The proposed formula allows, without using a map, to determine the distance between correspondents on routes up to 2000 km. In this case, the error in determining distances at mid-latitudes will not exceed 1...1,5 km (the side size of the small square of the QTH locator). This formula can be recommended for use in scoring in VHF competitions, which will eliminate the discrepancy in scoring and greatly facilitate the work of the judging panel. The distance between correspondents is calculated using the following formula:

Determining Distances with a QTH Locator

where R is the distance in kilometers;
j is the latitude of the more southerly station (out of two);
N1- coordinate number of the first letter of the QTH-locator;
N2 - the same, the second letter;
N3 - the first digit of the QTH locator:
N4 - the second digit of the QTH locator (if the second digit is zero, then N4=10);
N5SH, N5D - coordinate numbers of the last letter of the QTH-locator;

A is the coordinate number of the own locator in longitude (it is defined in the same way as the first term in parentheses);

B - the same, by latitude (defined as the second term in parentheses)

4cos values2j (defined by the number N3N4, which is the digital part of the QTH locator, for example, for SPI9e N3N4=19), N1, N2, N5SH, N5D for the corresponding letters and numbers of the QTH locator are given in the table.

The table is calculated for the coordinate grid of QTH locators from AA to ZZ, i.e. from 40 to 65 ° N. sh. and 0 to 50° W. e. If the correspondent is located to the west of 0° W. or south of 40 ° N. sh., for example, ZN38J (England) or IZ12e (Central Asia), then N1 and N2 they begin to count with a minus sign in the opposite direction, i.e. Z \u1d -2, Y \u3d -50, X \u14d -XNUMX, etc. If the correspondent is located east of XNUMX ° W. etc., for example, EQXNUMXa (Sverdlovsk), then the score N1 continues on, i.e. A=25, B=27, ..., E=30, etc.

Consider two examples:

1. Determine the distance between I correspondent UK3AAC (SPI9e) and II - UA3TCF (WQ14a):

Determining Distances with a QTH Locator

A11=22+0,1*4+0,02=22,42;

B11=16-0,125*1+0,96=16,84.

More southerly station UK3AAC, since NI2 <NII2, therefore, 4cos2j=1,27, then

Determining Distances with a QTH Locator

2. Determine the distance between UK3AAC and DL7SW (F051g):

A11=5+0,1*1+0,02=5,12;

В11=14-0,125*5+0,89=14,27.

More southerly station DL7SW, hence 4cos2j=1,37, then

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Real-time sequencing 28.07.2016

Scientists from the University of Nottingham (England), led by Dr. Matt Loose (Matt Loose), together with Oxford Nanopore Technologies, have developed a compact device that can decipher the desired sections of DNA "on order", in real time.

The handheld device, called MinION, is based on nanopore sequencing. Its essence is as follows: long organic molecules (for example, DNA) pass through the pores in the membrane, to which an electrical voltage is applied. In this case, the ion current through the pore changes depending on which part of the molecule passes through the pore - for example, which nucleotide. By registering these changes (special software does this in MinION), it is possible to decipher (sequence) the sequence of nucleotides in DNA.

The breakthrough achievements of British scientists is that the device they created is, firstly, compact and (relatively) easy to use, and secondly, it works in real time. The latter was achieved by accelerating the movement and processing of information inside the device. Thanks to this, it became possible to identify a section of DNA even before it completely passes through the pore. After identification, the system compares the section being processed with the one that needs to be decrypted, and gives the command to continue doing this or skip this section and immediately go to the next one (with which the same procedure will be repeated). This technology is called "Read Until".

There is little doubt that MinION can significantly accelerate research in various fields of biology and medicine. "Applying this approach to a wide range of problems, from pathogen detection to sequencing of target regions of the human genome, is a matter of the near future," said Dr. Luz.
