In school classrooms of physics and chemistry, in physical and chemical circles, many devices with glass parts are used for experiments. And they, as you know, often fail, because glass is a fragile material. And if there is nothing to replace the glass part, the whole device becomes unusable.
The guys from the laboratory of physical and chemical design of the House of Young Technicians of the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant named after V. I. Lenin solved this problem. For the repair of glass parts, they made a special burner. The fuel for it is drilled dry fuel tablets, which tourists use in camp stoves for cooking.
The glass-blowing burner of Chelyabinsk residents is simple and safe, it can be made in any school workshop. Let's see how it's set up.
The burner is assembled from a stand taken from an unusable physical device, and a body machined from duralumin on a lathe. A channel is drilled in the body for supplying air or oxygen to dry fuel. Air can be supplied through an aquarium microcompressor, and oxygen through a gasometer (oxygen is obtained chemically in a circle).
In the upper part of the body, recesses are drilled for installing nozzles. If a sharp, thin flame is required, a piece of quartz tube with a diameter of 3 mm is inserted into the burner; a ceramic insulator from an electric iron coil is used to obtain a wide flame.
So that the body does not overheat, it is separated from the flame by a heat-insulating gasket made from a piece of facing tile. To extinguish the flame, a special cap made of metal is used.
In the air blast mode (through a microcompressor), the torch can be used to solder broken glass tubes, bend and stretch them. Using oxygen blast, the same operations can be performed with products made of refractory glass and even quartz.
Chelyabinsk schoolchildren also use a glass-blowing burner for other purposes, for example, for working with various metals.
