In the manufacture of radio receivers, amateurs sometimes use home-made capacitors of variable capacitance - KPI (see, for example, the article by V. Guskov "VHF receiver"in "Radio", 1998, No. 4, pp. 24, 25). I would like to propose another KPI design, which is distinguished by ease of manufacture and very high reliability, since there are no rubbing contacts in it.

The design of the capacitor is traditional (Fig. 1), the differences are only in the form of plates, which can be made by etching the foil both on the main board of the device (this option is shown), and on a separate plate of foil fiberglass.

Homemade KPI

As can be seen from fig. 1a, both working plates 1 and 2 are fixed and have the shape of half rings of approximately the same area. An isolated section of the foil 3 is left to level the surface in height. The KPI outputs are connected with printed conductors 4 to other parts in accordance with the radio circuit.

The rotor, which simultaneously serves as a tuning knob, is also made of foil fiberglass (Fig. 1b). Its outer diameter is chosen from design considerations and ease of adjustment. A notch should be made along the outer circumference of the rotor. An auxiliary common lining is etched on the rotor, which, when the rotor rotates, partially or completely covers both fixed linings.

The total capacitance of the KPI is determined by the capacitances of two capacitors connected in series, each of which is formed by its fixed and common movable plates.

When assembling the KPI, an insulating gasket is placed between the stator and the rotor and the package is tightened with an MXNUMX screw with a nut, placing it under the last spring washer. After adjusting the clamping force, the nut is fixed with a locknut, paint, or simply soldered to the screw.

With a diameter of 20 mm and the use of a fluoroplastic film 50 μm thick as a gasket, the limits of capacitance change were 4–14 pF. This is quite enough to cover the VHF broadcasting range. The working angle of rotation of the rotor is about 180°.

If we change the shape of the plates, as shown schematically in Fig. 2, the working angle of rotation will be about 90°. In this option, it is also recommended to leave isolated sections of foil between the stator sectors to level the surface in height. The same design can be used for tuned capacitors.

Homemade KPI

To level the surface of the rotor fig. 1b it is useful to make a semiring similar to 1 in Fig. 1.a.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

176-layer 4D NAND Flash 13.12.2020

SK Hynix announced the completion of the "industry's most layered" 176-layer 4Gb TLC 512D NAND flash memory. In November, memory samples were sent to controller manufacturers.

The manufacturer is pushing the memory, which it calls 4D NAND, starting with 96-layer Charge Trap Flash or CTF memory. A feature of 4D NAND is the integration under layers with memory cells of a layer with peripheral circuits. SK Hynix estimates that the move to 176-layer memory has enabled 35% more memory per wafer compared to previous generation 4D NAND flash.

The read access time was reduced by 20% using the new cell array selection technology, and the data transfer rate was increased by 33% to 1,6 Gbps.

SK Hynix plans to start deliveries of the new memory in the middle of next year, starting with memory for mobile devices, in which case the increase in read speed reaches 70%, and write speed - 35%. Later, deliveries of chips for consumer and corporate SSDs will begin.
