In amateur radio practice, there are often cases when a miniature slide switch with more than three positions is needed. Commercially available sliding switches usually have two or three positions and only one or two directions.

P2K pushbutton switches are widely used in electronic engineering. They are well-deservedly popular with radio amateurs. The modular design of these switches and their sectional nature allow for many different combinations and are convenient for printed wiring, but with all variations in the number of directions, the number of positions remains unchanged - two.

The parallel increase in the number of P2K cases, proposed by S. Minaev in the article "P2K instead of a biscuit switch" ("Radio", 1990, No. 5, p. 61), increases the dimensions of the switch and makes it inconvenient to use, since the operating positions correspond to rather complex combinations of pressing several buttons.

To obtain a single-case multi-position slide switch, a simple revision of the original P2K will be required, and a faulty one or roughly dismantled with wire cutters from the printed circuit board is suitable.

Multi-position slide switch
Fig. 1

On fig. 1 shows the device of the 8P2N slide switch (only the body is not shown), converted from P2K with eight groups of contacts Of the eleven possible positions of the switch slide 1-2-V-3-4-V-5-6-V-7-8 there are three intermediate positions , marked with the letter B, correspond to the off state and are not used in operation.

P2K must be disassembled and the housing cover removed, leaving the pin contacts in their places. The operation should be performed gradually, in small fragments, separating them with wire cutters. In place of the cover, it is necessary to install and glue with BF-2 glue the contact strip 1, made of fiberglass laminated on one side with a thickness of 1 ... 1,5 mm. Printed conductors and pads on the bar are etched. After the glue dries, the pins of the contacts on the bar must be soldered so that excess rosin does not flow under the bar. The bar can be made wider and longer if there are no obstacles to this at the place of the future installation of the switch.

The movable group of the switch consists of a handle 2 and a slider 3, fastened with two M2 screws 6 mm long with a countersunk head. The slider is a segment 16 mm long of the P2K rod between lines A and B (Fig. 2).

Fig. 2

Two holes are drilled along the edges of the engine and an M2 thread is cut into them.

The handle can be cut out of any plastic sheet with a thickness of 3,8 ... 4 mm. Movable contacts from P2K are installed in the grooves of the engine, inserted into the prepared case and the handle is screwed. The movable group should move freely with the handle, without jamming, from lock to lock.

Multi-position slide switch
Fig. 3

In the case when a complete replacement of the 10P1N switch with the formula 3P1N is necessary, the "print" on the contact strip must correspond to fig. 2. At the same time, a uniform alternation of positions is provided without intermediate unused ones - B-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-XNUMX-XNUMX.

If the converted switch is supposed to be mounted on a printed circuit board, in some cases contact strip 1 can be dispensed with - the board will perform its functions. It is necessary to cut a groove for handle 2 in it, drill holes for the switch contacts and form the corresponding printed conductors.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Wind electricity on bacteria 30.07.2016

PhD student Tyler Shendruk and his colleagues at Oxford University have created a virtual model of a miniature "windmill" that uses a stream of moving E. coli bacteria instead of wind energy.

The scientists simulated swimming of bacteria in a liquid nutrient medium (agar) on a computer. After that, a disk-rotor rotating on an axis was virtually "placed" in the center of this liquid. Since the bacteria move randomly, the disk also moved randomly, turning one way and then the other.

However, when several discs were already placed in the same liquid, arranged in rows at regular intervals from each other (just in case, we recall once again that all this happened within the framework of a computer model), the nature of their rotation suddenly became stably ordered. Namely, each rotor constantly rotated in the same direction - clockwise or counterclockwise - and the directions of rotation of neighboring disks were always opposite.

Shendruk and colleagues explained this by the fact that the bacteria formed a self-organizing system with the disks. Each rotor became the center of a flow of bacteria flowing around it from all sides, which always moves in one direction (hence the opposite rotation of neighboring disks). We can say that there was no other way out for Escherichia coli, because otherwise their movement would have stopped altogether.

Similar processes of cell self-organization, Shendruk writes in his article, are often observed in multicellular living organisms - especially in growing tissues, when a mass of cells moves in an organized manner to the same place. "This is a spontaneous, but well-coordinated action," the scientist notes.

In general, the significance of this work lies not only in the creation of a spectacular model that demonstrates one of the most important biological principles. Of course, it is hardly feasible to generate energy in this way, but the results obtained can also help engineers develop mechanisms that include living cells. Such mechanisms are already being developed: for example, this is a robot similar to a stingray, which is set in motion by heart muscle cells.
