Artificial wood from the laboratory

19.12.2023

Now not only meat, but also trees can be grown in laboratory conditions. Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed artificial wood without harming any living trees.

This important scientific advance not only provides new opportunities in forestry, but also raises questions regarding the environmental impacts and potential challenges associated with the use of artificial wood. The prospect of reduced deforestation raises important questions about sustainability and the responsible use of natural resources.

The researchers extracted cells from the leaves of the major plant, a colorful subshrub often used for decoration. The resulting cells were placed in the conditions necessary for their reproduction - a liquid and nutrient medium.

The cells were then transferred to a gel matrix (a porous material made from gel tubes) where they continued to grow. To convert these cells into lignin, which gives wood rigidity, scientists added auxin and cytokinins - special plant hormones.

The experiment was completed successfully, the wood successfully grew in the matrix. This opens up the prospect of being able to grow material similar to that currently mined through mass logging. Moreover, the new method requires less equipment for transporting and subsequent processing of wood.

If this invention becomes widespread, it could lead to a reduction in logging worldwide. However, there is a possibility that this will not have a positive impact on the climate crisis.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Smartphones charge faster and understand voice 24.02.2013

Major chipmaker Qualcomm has announced the development of Quick Charge 2.0 technology, which can reduce the charging time of batteries in smartphones and tablets by 75%. To realize the potential of the new technology, it is necessary that it be supported by both the mobile device itself and its charger. The technology can be present in the device as a separate integrated circuit or as part of an integrated circuit responsible for powering Snapdragon 800 family processors.

The new Snapdragon 4 quad-core chips for mobile devices were announced in January. Compared to the Snapdragon S800, they bring increased performance per watt and an integrated Adreno 4 graphics controller with twice the speed of operation. In laboratory tests using Quick Charge 330, Qualcomm engineers were able to reduce tablet charging time from 2.0 hours to less than 7 hours, the press service said.

Quick Charge 2.0 is the successor to Quick Charge 1.0 technology. Over 70 models of devices with this technology entered the market last year. Compared to the first-generation solution, the new technology provides even better results and is more flexible, the company explained.

Quick Charge 2.0 technology is backwards compatible with Quick Charge 1.0, so chargers that support Quick Charge 1.0 will work with it. But in order to realize the potential of the technology, it will be necessary to use both the device itself and a charger that supports second-generation technology. In addition, support for the second version will soon be built into standard micro-USB chargers, which can be bought at any store, Qualcomm promised. Thanks to the power of 60 W, they can be used, among other things, to charge small laptops.

In addition to the new charging technology, Qualcomm introduced another built-in technology of the Snapdragon 800 processors, the energy-efficient function of continuously analyzing sound waves and isolating the voice command to wake up.
Snapdragon Voice Activation is the world's first integrated processor feature that always works and consumes a small part of the charge, the company said in a press release.

Smartphone manufacturers with Snapdragon 800 processors will be able to define the wake-up word. When the phone "hears" it, being in any state, it will "wake up" and activate the voice control system. The technology is safe, the developer assured, as it only responds to the voice of the device owner.
