The laptop, although it is a portable computer, but for the most part it is still designed to be powered from the mains through an external pulsed source. In this sense, after buying a laptop, I was somewhat disappointed. I naively hoped that I could count on "autonomous navigation" for at least five or six hours. But realistically, in simple typing mode (without connected peripherals and without using a DVD-RW drive) only a couple of hours! This is very small and categorically did not suit me, so I decided to power the laptop from the on-board network of a boat or car (nominal 12 V). But here, too, the "slingshot" - the supply voltage was 18 V, which does not fit anywhere at all.

I had to make a step-up DC-DC converter. The figure shows a diagram of this converter. I want to note that it has a large power reserve, since the maximum output current is more than 8 A, while it takes no more than 3 A to power a laptop. The ability to adjust the output voltage from 16 to 35 V allows you to use it to power other equipment , for example, a laptop with a different constant supply voltage, or some kind of communication equipment. You can even power an automotive ULF from it, which requires an increased supply voltage.

The converter is made on a UC3843 chip according to an almost typical scheme. This IC is designed to work in such circuits. It contains a pulse-width modulated oscillator and a comparator circuit for an output voltage stabilization system. UC3843 itself is quite powerful, but here it is powered by an additional output key on a VT1 field effect transistor of the IRFZ48N type. This made it possible to facilitate the temperature regime of the device, since less power is dissipated on the VT1 transistor due to its low open resistance and at the same time increase the output current, limiting itself to symbolic radiators for A1 and VT1.

The voltage pumping occurs at the L1 inductor and is rectified by the VD1 diode. The output voltage sensor necessary for the operation of the stabilizer is a divider on resistors R8 - R10. Using the trimmer resistor R9 set the required output voltage.

Theoretically, this circuit allows you to set the output voltage even lower, at the input level. But in reality, at the same time, it simply turns off, and the source voltage flows to the output through L1, so there will be no stabilization in this case.

Inductor L1 is wound on a T106-26 ferrite ring, it contains 25 neatly stacked turns of winding wire with a diameter of 0,47 mm folded three times. A single 1,5 mm wire can also be used, but it is not so easy to wind it.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Biologists have grown a fly with dinosaur genes 14.10.2018

Scientists using genetic engineering have received a line of fruit flies in the genome of which there are no mutations that arose about 140 million years ago. These modifications significantly affected the development of the animal body, and by abolishing them, the authors were able to understand what ancient mutations caused important evolutionary changes in the embryonic development of organisms.

Scientists have long tried to understand how mutations in genes change the embryonic development of organisms, thanks to which life forms on Earth have become so diverse. However, it is extremely difficult to pinpoint key mutations, since they originated in the distant past, in long-extinct animals, and their traces in the genome have since been hidden by subsequent mutations.

"By introducing individual mutations that occurred in the deep past in ancient genes, we were able to show exactly how each of them influenced the development of organisms millions of years ago," says lead author Steven Small from New York University (USA). that the main cause of fundamental changes in the development of the animal, which became indispensable for all their descendants, were just two random mutations.

As part of this work, biologists studied the Bicoid gene, which controls the formation of the head in the embryo of flies. Organisms with a non-working gene variant die early, as their abdomen begins to form at both ends of the body. However, Bicoid is not found in other insects or more distant relatives of the fly, showing how even fundamental aspects of development can change drastically during evolution.

Scientists removed the Bicoid gene from modern flies and inserted a reconstructed ancestor into them. Such animals also began to die quickly. Then the biologists started adding mutations one at a time that happened in this gene millions of years ago. Most of them had little or no effect, but two worked together to turn the gene on, resulting in a distorted but recognizable head in the right place in the embryos.

Yura
Good scheme, working.

Maksim
16V the throttle starts to buzz, I connect the load, the voltage drops to 12V

Yura
I probably screwed up with the throttle ... I assembled it according to this scheme, everything works like a clock.
