Plastic automatic electric kettles with fast water heating are now in vogue. But, unfortunately, fakes, the quality of which does not stand up to criticism, are increasingly appearing on the market.
If the products bought a few years ago could work for two years before breaking down, now the term of work in "advanced" models has been reduced to a month. The greatest number of failures falls on the thermostat. It does not help in this situation and the fact that spare thermostats are sold on the market. Of the three prototypes, two specimens withstood three inclusions, one worked for a week. The reason for the refusal is contacts. As the analysis showed, the contacts used in the thermostat are not designed to work with a powerful load, which is why they overheat. After all, the power of the heating element in the electric kettle is 2 kW.
The situation is aggravated by non-heat-resistant plastic, the melting of which leads to disruption of the contacts. To extend the life of the thermostat, you need to unload the contacts by including an electromagnetic relay in the circuit. To do this, the thermostat is disassembled, contacts 5, 6 are removed and cut off, as shown by the lines in Fig. 1. The recesses at points 1 and 2 are drilled through.
The wires soldered directly to the terminals of the heating element are passed through the drilled holes at points 1 and 2. The second pair of wires is soldered to pins 3 and 4 on the outside of the thermostat, in the upper part of the pins, so that they do not interfere with the installation of the electric kettle on the contact stand.
The wires connected to the relay winding are soldered from the outside to the wires of the neon light bulb. The relay can be of any type, it is important that the operating current is not lower than 9 A with the smallest possible dimensions. The electrical connection diagram is shown in Fig.2.
The relay is fixed outside the electric kettle. Relay outputs with soldered wires are covered with a plastic cover to ensure electrical safety.
