Here is a diagram of a cheap multi-mode charger for nickel - cadmium or nickel - metal hydride batteries containing 2 to 10 cells.

High performance battery charger

A switching stabilizer is used, which can operate in the current stabilization mode. Connecting the negative battery terminal directly to the device's common wire improves efficiency and reduces heat loss. The pulse stabilized voltage converter LTC1148HV (manufactured by Linear Technology) works with synchronous switches and is fully consistent with the task. Its conversion efficiency is over 90%; it has two current sensor inputs (Sens+ and Sens-) and a dedicated Ith pin.

The DC voltage level at this input sets the maximum current in the inductor. For example, if a low-resistance resistor with a widely used value of 0,1 ohm is used as a shunt, and the Ith pin is connected to the 2-JV (twice the junction voltage - two junction voltage) output of the MAX713 chip, then the peak current of the inductor will be 1,55, 1148 A. The average current also depends on the output voltage, but this can be compensated by adding another feedback loop, for which part of the output voltage is applied to the ITH pin. The voltage stabilization mode in the LTC2 chip is turned off if the resistive divider (R7 and RXNUMX) connected to the Vfb pin is rated for a voltage greater than that of a fully charged battery.

If the battery voltage turns out to be greater than the calculated one, then there will be no current pulse regulator at the output. If a compensation charge is also needed, then a key (transistor U5A) and a resistor (R14) should be added, through which the required charge current will go to the battery directly from the primary power source (VIN) - a simple network adapter - after the charger controller is on MAX713 chip will turn off the fast charge mode, or if the battery voltage is low at the beginning of the charge cycle.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Ant pedometer 11.02.2007

The runner ant, which lives in the Sahara, flies confidently over the monotonous sandy landscape and returns to its nest. Like many insects, it is guided by the sun, but how does the slider measure the distance traveled?

German entomologists have shown that the ant has a pedometer. Ants were attracted to a feeder 10 meters from the nest, and then their return was monitored. Moreover, the legs of some insects were cut, removing the last segments, while others, on the contrary, were lengthened by gluing pork bristles to the ends of the legs. It turned out that those with shorter legs were looking for a nest closer than it actually was, and ants on "stilts" ran away in search of a nest too far.

Conclusion: during its movements, the ant counts the steps, and in order to return, it takes exactly the same number of steps in the opposite direction as it went forward.
