Many radio amateurs are familiar with the circuit of this simple voltage regulator with protection against overloads and short circuits of the output circuit. It has a number of positive qualities and therefore has gained wide popularity among radio amateurs.

Voltage stabilizer 13-16/9 volts with short circuit protection

However, the disadvantage of the stabilizer is that the load current limiting threshold of its protection device depends on the static transfer coefficient of the regulating transistor. Since when the transistor heats up, its static current transfer coefficient increases, the stabilizer limiting current also increases. As a result, the power allocated to the regulating transistor increases, which can lead to its overheating and failure. Diode V4, connected between the control base and the regulator collector (shown in the figure), practically eliminates this drawback. In the normal mode of operation of the stabilizer, diode V5 is open, and diode V4 is closed and does not affect the operation of the device.

If the load current is increased, then the output voltage of the stabilizer will begin to decrease, the diode V5 will close, and the transistor V2, together with the resistors R1, R3 and the zener diode V3, will work as a current stabilizer. In this regard, the base current of the regulating transistor V1, and hence its collector current, are limited. Simultaneously with the closing of the diode V5, the diode V4 opens, shunts the zener diode V3, and it exits the stabilization mode. This leads to a decrease in the voltage at the base of the transistor V2 and, accordingly, to a decrease in the limiting current. If an LED is used as a V4 diode, for example AL102A, then it will serve as an indicator of stabilizer overload, but in this case the short-circuit current will increase slightly due to a larger voltage drop at the LED junction.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

The internet is bad for trees 20.03.2011

Five years ago, the authorities of two Dutch towns noticed that the ash trees, near which they mounted antennas for wireless Internet connection using Wi-Fi technology, were getting sick and withering.

The bark of the trees changed color in places, began to crack, juice flowed from the cracks, warts appeared on the trunks, and the branches began to fly around. No bacteria, no viruses, no insect pests responsible for the unhealthy trees were found. And two city halls turned to specialists from the University of Wageningen with a request to find out what was the matter.

The researchers exposed seedlings of ash trees and other plants to radio waves of the same frequency and power emitted by a Wi-Fi antenna. Experimental plants were located 50-300 centimeters from the radiation source, the experiment lasted more than three months. The leaves of those seedlings that were closer to the antenna acquired a metallic sheen and began to fall off.

A survey of green spaces in several cities in the Netherlands showed that 70% of deciduous trees had similar symptoms, and in neighboring forests where the Internet was not caught, only 10% of trees were sick.

The authors of the study emphasize that these are only preliminary results and more research is needed. Perhaps the point is simply that the forest air is cleaner than the city air.
