I decided to get a mobile phone to establish a connection with the summer cottage. It turned out that the connection was unstable, there were disconnections, missing words. The likely reason for this phenomenon is the long distance to the base station. Indeed, if you climb a tree, the connection quality is good, but from home - not so much.

The way out of this situation is to install an external antenna. Of course, such antennas are sold in companies specializing in cellular accessories, but the price of such antennas is usually high. The idea arose to make a simple antenna on my own. I decided to start by trying what I had already tried for receiving television in the UHF range - a double triangular antenna. It is described in some detail in Mikhailov's article "UHF antenna - per hour of work"(See "Radio" No. 6 for 1998).

A drawing of an antenna designed for the 900 MHz band is shown in the figure.

Another option for a cell phone antenna

Material - foil fiberglass or getinaks (the latter is better - the foil is more easily torn off from it). Having marked the sheet, cut the foil with a knife or cutter, then remove unnecessary sections. The cable is 75 ohm, its braid is soldered to the bottom half of the antenna, and the center conductor is soldered to the top. Then lay the cable as shown in the figure. A and B are zero potential points, a mast is attached to them, which can be metal. Since the polarization of electromagnetic waves in cellular communications is vertical, the antenna is installed so that point A is at the top and B is at the bottom.

You can also add a reflector, but this is not necessary. Reflector dimensions - 170x150 mm. It is mounted at a distance of 65 mm from the antenna web. Metal fasteners can be used if screwed at zero potential points.

The antenna sheet (more precisely, foil) must be coated with some kind of varnish or glue to protect it from corrosion. The length of the cable should be minimal - at such frequencies it has an attenuation of the order of 1 dB / m, and the gain of such an antenna is only 5 ... 6 dB.

The best way to connect the antenna to the phone is through a special cord (antenna adapter). If there is no such cord, and the phone is equipped with a whip antenna, you can make a communication coil and connect an external antenna through it. The end of the cable is cleaned of external insulation and braid for a length of 25 ... 30 cm. The central conductor in the insulation is wound on a metal rod (for example, a drill), the diameter of which corresponds to the phone's whip antenna, fixed with threads and slightly heated (for example, by applying the rod to a hot soldering iron). After cooling, a good spring is obtained, which is put on a standard telephone antenna. The number of turns is 5-7. The terminals of the coupling coil are soldered to the cable. The results of using the antenna exceeded all expectations.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Friends take the pain away 10.05.2016

Endorphins, or endogenous morphines, which are synthesized by brain neurons, help to overcome pain and stress, and also affect the emotional state.

For example, some feeling of elation and happiness that comes to us after exercise arises from the fact that overstressed muscles begin to hurt, and the brain tries to anesthetize them with the help of endorphins, which at the same time give joy. (Although it is worth clarifying that the very feeling of euphoria is born from the complex interaction of different systems of neurotransmitters, and it is definitely not worth writing off everything here on endorphins.)

On the other hand, animal and human studies have shown that endorphin levels are associated with socialization - roughly speaking, their levels are higher the more and the better we communicate with others. This suggests the conclusion that friendship can literally be painkillers.

According to the experiments of Katerina V.-A. Johnson and Robin IM Dunbar of the University of Oxford, this is indeed the case. Psychologists invited 101 people to the laboratory and asked them to perform the following exercise: lean against the wall, half squatting down, so that there was a right angle at the knees. It is quite difficult to be in such a position, so soon the muscles begin to ache due to tension.

Those with the widest social circle endured the longest. Of course, here we can say that some people were probably just physically stronger, but the researchers separately clarify that the ability to maintain the above posture with physical fitness did not coincide in any way.

Along the way, it was found that those who were generally in better physical shape did not have as extensive social ties as those of weaker comrades in the experiment. It is possible that someone who is involved in fitness or sports simply does not have time for extensive communication, or that he receives so many endorphins from exercise that he may well make do with fewer friends.
